Management Player Power

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Do we have a culture of player power at this club?

I see plenty of people posting about players deciding they don’t want to play for this manager.

Plenty of us, myself included are starting to question some of these injuries and return dates.

We’ve historically seen leaks via Sami Mokbel (that gooner reporter) that the players are unhappy with previous managers. Usually just before that coach got fired,

Is any of it true? Or are the Sami Mokbel leaks just Donna Cullen PR stunts before a coach gets fired?

If we do have players feeling they can pick and choose which coach they do or don’t want to play for? Can we ever win things with a culture like that in the club?

Maybe it’s just part of modern football for most clubs?

IMO certain coaches that win all the time like Pep and Klopp have a level of immunity to it because no player at Liverpool or City would ever feel they have the choice to work hard for the coach if they don’t like him. And the opposite is true in the history of this club because the players have been able to go straight to Levy and wait out managers like Poch, Jose and Conte

Valid question and definitely an issue that needs addressing. First, we gotta have the weakest leadership group known to man. I mean, it was already shaky at the knees with Hugo, Dier and Kane...but with Vic, Biss & Sonny? Blimey.

That said, the main problem this once great club of ours has had for the past 25 years is the excessive power the chairman has and, mainly, that weak ass always-the-bridesmaid-never-the-bride culture he's instilled from day one. The lads probably got a Rolex engraved "Carabao Cup semi-finalists 2025".

I think some of the players are not "rushing" back from these injuries but can't decide if it's because of Ange, the state of the club, the toxic atmosphere, combo of all of these. We haven't had a proper leader at this club since Mabbutt. He wouldn't be putting up with this bollocks. He'd go out there patched up week in week out wearing a mask. You had to drag him off the field.

It's been said before most recently by Conte. There is a country club feel to it all and there is no pressure to win. It's okay if you don't win e.g. expensive watches for making a final.

as I have said a few times since January- he has lost the dressing room - most evident from the last match & the missing "injured" players.

Should we as fans accept a player culture where any manager can “lose the dressing room”?

It’s the clubs decision to sack a manager, not the players. A manager can lose the fans because they pay everyone’s salary but the players? They aren’t paid by the manager.

Honestly, there is a lot to be said about this.

We really need some toughness within the squad to call each other out. They love Son for the good human he is but do any of them fear him? Because that’s 100% something a captain needs.

My gut isn’t its player power rather we have no leaders, no fighters.

Our best leaders/fighters appear to be Gray, Spence and maybe Davies. Gray is a kid, Davies is a sub and on the way out and Spence was seen as an outcast no long ago.

The ‘leadership group’ Romero, Maddison and Son appears to be powder puff. Our players are by comparison to other teams physically weaker and mentally weaker.

Our entire hope is on Moore, Vuskovic, Gray, Bergvall, Odoburt, Tel etc. Gray and Bergvall are already physically stronger than pretty much every other player at the club aside from the likes of Solanke and they are 18. They are the only players they don’t get pushed off the ball easily.

When I look at our squad all I see is fancy and weak. There is talent but no steel.

it is the players that most football fans are interested in. Not their salesman team leader or the board of directors etc. They should have the power as they are the ones people pay to watch. For example, the type of players Spurs would somehow get no matter how bleak it seemed around the edges. Any leader in the playing squad has been shipped as that is how the team leader wants it. The coolest Spurs managers were generally quite humble. Times change.

Whatever the culture issue is, Ange clearly hasn’t managed to change it.

The only thing he’s done different is keep enough currency with the fans and the board that the stadium hasn’t turned fully toxic yet and the board still haven’t made him carry the can… yet.

Romero is the let down in terms of leadership imo. I can defend the way he plays but he’s not playing and he doesn’t even seem interested.

So, should the players also get sacked when performances and results are bad?

Conte warned us about this player." All a da time it likea dis at Tottenham. Excusa for da playa and sack da manager to protecta da playa".

The players are just Cortinas on the forecourt of Levy Motors.

If Frank Butcher steps out of line; he carries the can.

He also said the owners have set that culture for 20 years and won nothing.

He was doing it to get fired because he was fucking sick of the players and he refused to come back so he can fuck off.

But he told no lies.

The point is Conte couldn't accept the culture at THFC where players are protected.

Romero ended Spurs Champions League campaign, with his red card on the half way line, and Conte resented him for it.

Conte wanted to 'kill' Romero.

Levy preferred to sack Conte after that presser rather than do what Conte wanted.

It is that simple.

Levy expects his managers to continually polish turds.

Conte couldn't bare it beyond 16 months.

Definitely players know if they don’t put it in, the manager goes before they do at this club.

At top clubs it’s the opposite. The manager is the one with the power.

Only Madrid and Barca are slightly different but they are usually dealing with the most elite players. You can flex a bit then.

Even then it depends on the manager to some degree. Doubt any player at Real could turn on Zidane and get away with it.

But fully agree with what you said first. Players at small time clubs know they can outlast the manager. Top clubs that shit won’t fly because a winning team and winning culture is more important than any player.

It’s why Fergie didn’t care about moving Beckham or Ronaldo.

that doesnt explain how Ange managed to convince Levy to cut 8 or 9 players last season - the non ange-ballers lke Sanchez and PEH. And I thought Romero loves ANge?
