Match PSG v Tottenham Hotspur Wednesday 8pm

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It’s about goals not this xg rubbish.

My post, in your dreams.

You quote a post that shows we created 38 x the Xg (and scored 3 times the goals) and said "it's about the goals"

There is a non-coincidental link between scoring goals and Xg.
If your Xg is as low as ours was against Bournemouth (0.17) Chelsea (0.05) and Arse (0.07) then it's unsurprising we managed 1 goal in 3 games and that goal was a total utter freak goal.

Think of it it this way. You're not likely to be in a car crash if you're not in a car.
You're not likely to score goals if your Xg is so low you're clearly not even having shots.

Last seasons league table with a column for Xg.
Liverpool - scored 86 v an Xg of 85.8
Arse - scored 69 vs Xg 72.6
City 72 vs 70.3

Go down the table, all the way to 17th and you find us.
Scored 64 vs XG 60.8
This shows we relied on a number of goals out of nothing (thinking of Pape Sarr vs Brighton for instance) to score freak goals.

When there are 3 points for having a higher xD I might be interested in it.

If I was a manager/Coach/DOF I'd use the stats to make a chairman/the board understand where we needed to strengthen the team.

Much easier to make the case for spending 80m or whatever. "Look, mate. We start scoring goals from these brilliant chances that we're blowing, and suddenly we're in CL territory and the transfer gets covered in 6 months"

Makes a lot more sense to me than what LFC did with their transfer budget. The Hedge Fund morons just looking at salaries and transfer fees.

I would love to know the ages of people who don't like XG, seems very much like a boomer thing.
I wonder if it's like watching a boxing match, the viewers can mark their own scorecard, do football supporters sit there noting the XG and other such could've would've stats, instead of yelling ''how did you miss that you silly cunt?''.

I'm generation x.

If people argue with me and they're just plain wrong I'll reply a few times then put them on ignore.

IMO XG is better explained as 'the higher XG' means creating the likelihood of goals being scored.

A low XG means goals scored are likely to be from an opposition error or other circumstances, nothing planned (although obviously players should take advantage of opposition errors)

Yeah I don't think people go through games and note down the xg like you say, it's a good tool to analyse the game state after the match though

As I always say it's best used to work out trends so it's better to use it over time as opposed to an isolated match because it's very accurate in that sense.

When we playing PSG?

I see this thread continually bumped,so I assume it's an upcoming game, and not pointless regurgitation of what has since occurred and cannot be put right.

Hopefully we play well.

At a guess, it's the old timers or "Legacy" supporters that think that xg, FM ratings, heat maps, etc mean nothing at the end of the day. Football at its best is basically a simple game, score one more than the other side. It's got worse with the coming of the PL, they make up their own records, and ignore 100 years of football history.
As I've said before, each to their own and if that's what floats your boat, carry on. But for me, it's yet another illustration that we live in a world of spin, illusion and fakery.

Fairs I hear it but it's annoying when people say it's complete bollocks when it clearly isn't.

Or it could just be that its a bullshit stat.

Its about as relevant as corners won or possession.

EDIT : The trouble with stats is you can make whatever you want out of them, they can spin a narrative or pad a report.
I work with them all day every day. You can always find a stat to manipulate to tell a good or bad story.

An example, the PSG game approaching the end of the first half, the co-commentator says it must worry Thomas Frank that PSG have had I think it was 8 shots to our 1 or something like that. But most of those shots were long ranged efforts that didn't trouble the keeper or were blocked. Meanwhile we were getting in on PSG's right flank time and time again with Spence and Bergval but just lacking a final pass. If anything we looked more dangerous than them in that half. This speaks to my first point about using stats to spin a narrative, because the narrative surrounding us this season is all about chance creation.
Once the media gets it into their tiny skulls they will just rant on and on.

XG will sometimes tell a story of a match and sometimes it won't. And its largely irrelevant because we have won and lost plenty of games in the past with superior or inferior XG with a low block and the low blocking team scores one of their only chances on the counter.
The entire premise of low block throws XG into a cocked hat as a reliable stat.

Funny how every single footbal club and all the coaches use it to work out trends and opposition strengths and weaknesses but distaste for scouse sits in his underpants all day chronically unemployed tells us that's it a load of bullshit.

You don't understand it, nevermind
