Good to get a different view.
As a Celtic fan, I do think it’s debatable whether it should have been awarded. Not so much that it hits his hand, because there have been new images and angles since the incident that are close to conclusive that it did, but what gave me pause was that Beaton and Dallas in VAR didn’t have those angles at the time of the decision. In Scotland the refs this season have actually been very consistent in deeming contact with the hand a penalty 9 times out of 10, but I don’t know that they could unequivocally have said that was the case in this situation, which raises the question of whether the initial decision can reasonably be overturned.
I think there’s a much wider football conversation to be had on whether in general a handball violation that doesn’t prevent an certain attempt on goal (i.e. in this instance Trusty winning that header
might have lead to a shot, but equally it may not have) justifies such a harsh punishment as a penalty, but that’s a conversation for another day.
At any rate, given all the context, timing and repercussions of what it meant, this was always going to be massively,
massively controversial. However there’s also no question that a huge part of that is purely because of how it impacts the Hearts fairytale. Which is fair enough, I get it. To be honest, even I’ve had intrusive thoughts at times like ‘maybe it wouldn’t be too bad if someone else won this year/it’ll teach our board a lesson/it’d be great for Scottish football!
But that doesn’t mean that the fallout hasn’t been batshit insane. For instance Linekar calling it the worst decision in the history of VAR(!) Come on now Gary, you and I both know that if that’d been a penalty given to Motherwell in the 32nd minute of the match rather than to Celtic in the 95th, you and nearly everyone else wouldn’t have even commented on it.
As the Scottish Football Association’s statement today highlighted, others have been straight up irresponsible with the language they’ve used. Like Hearts manager Derek McInnes calling it “disgusting” and clearly insinuating a conspiracy for Celtic to win the league. He brought up other recent incidents but conveniently ignored the strong claim Celtic had for a penalty in the first half that wasn’t given or a couple of games back against Hibs where their player clearly handled the ball before scoring against Celtic. And let’s be clear here about who McInnes is: an ex-Rangers player who is on film singing a sectarian song, such is the crazy world of Scottish football!
Not that it impacts or justifies this decision in any way, but with all the talk of bias floating around, it’s worth mentioning that since VAR’s introduction in Scotland, breaking down for and against VAR decisions leading to penalties shakes out like this:
Whatever the case, whether right or wrong, penalty or not, this has set up one hell of a final day and the atmosphere tomorrow is going to be crazy. If Hearts can deal with that and win or even draw the game, then fair play, they 100% deserve their title and nobody should begrudge them it. So that being said, come on Celtic!
