Do they release the audio of VAR checks in Scotland?

I strongly suspect the match official was hung out to dry by the way the VAR official in the booth characterized what he was going to look at. Which doesn't forgive the mistake, but spreads the blame.

Anyway, don't be assholes to referees off the field. Fight for a game that can be officiated properly and hold referees accountable for their performance against those standards.
That’s basically what one of the vlogs has said the var official gave him no option but to award a penalty but apparently he’s had issues in the past with Celtic fans and they think that influenced his decision.

It's the VAR official that's hunted through that single replay and gone "oh look what I've found". Bad, bad, bad practice. The opposite of "clear and obvious".
And the previous “clear & obvious “ Hearts denied a clear penalty v Motherwell last Saturday referee went to the monitor and cancelled the off field decision! Hearts have been well and truly shafted and you can see their frustrations …..with Celtic benefiting on both counts

It looks like I'm in a minority of one. I thought it was clear that the ball was touched by the defender's hand just as his head connected with the ball. For me, it was a clear penalty. Having said that, I hope Hearts win on Saturday.

Good to get a different view.

As a Celtic fan, I do think it’s debatable whether it should have been awarded. Not so much that it hits his hand, because there have been new images and angles since the incident that are close to conclusive that it did, but what gave me pause was that Beaton and Dallas in VAR didn’t have those angles at the time of the decision. In Scotland the refs this season have actually been very consistent in deeming contact with the hand a penalty 9 times out of 10, but I don’t know that they could unequivocally have said that was the case in this situation, which raises the question of whether the initial decision can reasonably be overturned.

I think there’s a much wider football conversation to be had on whether in general a handball violation that doesn’t prevent an certain attempt on goal (i.e. in this instance Trusty winning that header might have lead to a shot, but equally it may not have) justifies such a harsh punishment as a penalty, but that’s a conversation for another day.

At any rate, given all the context, timing and repercussions of what it meant, this was always going to be massively, massively controversial. However there’s also no question that a huge part of that is purely because of how it impacts the Hearts fairytale. Which is fair enough, I get it. To be honest, even I’ve had intrusive thoughts at times like ‘maybe it wouldn’t be too bad if someone else won this year/it’ll teach our board a lesson/it’d be great for Scottish football!

But that doesn’t mean that the fallout hasn’t been batshit insane. For instance Linekar calling it the worst decision in the history of VAR(!) Come on now Gary, you and I both know that if that’d been a penalty given to Motherwell in the 32nd minute of the match rather than to Celtic in the 95th, you and nearly everyone else wouldn’t have even commented on it.

As the Scottish Football Association’s statement today highlighted, others have been straight up irresponsible with the language they’ve used. Like Hearts manager Derek McInnes calling it “disgusting” and clearly insinuating a conspiracy for Celtic to win the league. He brought up other recent incidents but conveniently ignored the strong claim Celtic had for a penalty in the first half that wasn’t given or a couple of games back against Hibs where their player clearly handled the ball before scoring against Celtic. And let’s be clear here about who McInnes is: an ex-Rangers player who is on film singing a sectarian song, such is the crazy world of Scottish football!

Not that it impacts or justifies this decision in any way, but with all the talk of bias floating around, it’s worth mentioning that since VAR’s introduction in Scotland, breaking down for and against VAR decisions leading to penalties shakes out like this:

Whatever the case, whether right or wrong, penalty or not, this has set up one hell of a final day and the atmosphere tomorrow is going to be crazy. If Hearts can deal with that and win or even draw the game, then fair play, they 100% deserve their title and nobody should begrudge them it. So that being said, come on Celtic! 😆

I would bet all the glue in Glasgow that you’d be significantly less sanguine about this if the incident had happened at the other end of the pitch.

Very easy to be calm and balanced when you support the big team that got the benefit of the big decision.

Not a personal pop, by the way. Just natural that this would be anyone’s reaction.

I’m Australian, so it’s natural for me to be calm, measured and ever so sophisticated.

But yeah shoe on the other foot and I guess I’d be absolutely raging. Like you say, just the way it is 😂

What’s your prediction for tomorrow?

Sat. 12:30pm

Hearts just need a draw.

Rooting for them.
Same scenario 40 odd years ago and it went pear shaped, they’re up against it today big time, imo they deserve to win it! Celtic have had consistently “help” the whole season amount of games where they’ve had 7,8, 9 minutes added on has been ridiculous top it off with last Wednesday you can see why other teams are totally fed up.

How does a league with 12 teams end up playing 38 games? I always thought they played each other 4 times 2 at home 2 away but that's 44 games?

Dubious amounts of added on time have long been the reserve of big teams, not just in Scotland but here too, but what I will say is that Hearts have benefited from a fair stroke of ‘luck’ in other ways this season despite McInnes’ us against the world narrative.

But I’m not going to spoil the day by being a dick and will instead reiterate that if Hearts can go to Parkhead and get a result on the final day then fair fucks, they 100% deserve it.
