a little bit out there but it may actually be AMAZING!!!
does anybody remember/know of Luciano Spalletti?
he had a crazy playing formation that did wonders for roma a few years back,
(tink it was around 05-07 but i stand corrected). anyway what he did was employ
a 4-6-0 formation, no out and out strikers but rather wingers supply a free role
midfielder (bale?!). similar to a 4-2-3-1 but not quite.
man u used the same/similar tactic by building it around ronaldo as an attacking
midfielder but with no out and out centre forward.

wouldnt mind getting spalletti in to replace harry and trying something similar with spurs.
its out and out attacking football, and we have the team to do it without splashing out
on strikers come the new season. add perhaps hazard and/or robben and/or hoillet
to our already brilliant midfield, vertonghen to defence, and hey presto.
you have a midfield that can rotate all season long and produce the goods in the process.
what you think?

I've suggested this formation at times this season (obviously not suitable for every game!), and been ridiculed for being negative. When you have players like Bale, Lennon and van der Vaart, though, it really isn't negative IMO - it gives them the freedom to drift and roam and do their thing.

Man City have actually employed a similar system at times (less so now that Balotelli has been in the side), and it has worked well.

did some digging around and if you arent busy tonight...
Spalletti leading Zenit into the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history!!!

I think we need structure and defined roles.

Players like Bale and van der Vaart already have too much licence to roam imo.

agreed, but what about a free roaming ade or luka? if anybody desrves a free
roaming licence its those 2.

Pretty sure Barcelona played a game recently without a recognised striker....I would rather we didn't try to be clever dicks as whenever we do we tend to fuck up.

A maverick formation when we can't even come up with a formula for freekicks and corners?

well in order to take on the maverick formation we would need to replace harry with
Luciano Spalletti, who would most definately turn our free kick an corner nightmares around.

On the one hand it's negative, just listen: you have ZERO strikers.

On the other hand you've technically got a wave of 4 going forward assuming 2 midfielders are holding. Would still prefer to have a recognised goalscorer on the pitch though, as great as Bale and VdV are at finishing, an out-and-out striker is still going to be more effective.

To be fair, that's kinda what Ade has been doing all season. He's been much more of a free floating deep lying forward or attacking midfielder than a strong CF. Those average position charts show that in a lot of games he's sometimes been playing deeper on average than Bale, etc.

You need players all through the team who are more than just comfortable on the ball - they need to be excellent. We don't have that.
