Spain used to as well, it's how the line of longitude goes, with most of the country falling within the GMT zone.

Franco changed it during Hitler's time to be more in step with what he thought was the "new Europe". Every couple of years there's mumblings about changing it back but there's a lot of pushback from the bar and restaurant trade who benefit from it being lighter for longer.

Incidentally, the Canary Islands are firmly in the GMT zone and stayed that way even after Franco's change, meaning that when the the time is read out on the radio here they always have to add "una hora menos en Canarias" ("One hour less in the Canary Islands")

just back from 5 days South West Spain, between Gib and Cadiz. Sunset 8.40pm or so, lovely temp even then on the beach, and light for another half hour at least.

Love it also at the start of the day you can take it easy, doesn't get hot for a while, you're not going to miss anything. And when the sun's hot then for a lot of the time there's lovely shore breezes. Hence Tarifa being the kite surfing capital of the whole planet.

Such an underrated coastline. Tarifa beach very busy but only at the kitesurfing/windsurfing bits. All other beaches very quiet.

btw Best way of getting there fly to Gib (airport v quiet), walk across the border and then pick up hire car in La Linea.

I got the email saying it was a technical issue before I saw the 'postponement' on the site, saved me a lot of ranting and raving!
I've got my trusty Spurs poncho at the ready, as brollies not allowed in the stadium.
Hope to see some TFCers out and about in Lisbon or at the stadium.
Safe travels everyone and enjoy the game x

I always assumed it was for how cold it got in the likes of Russia and Ukraine so they put it on earlier before everything froze up.
I remember the good old days when the Soviets would put them on early and close all the factories to ensure full houses

Also recall reading that the East Germans only showed highlights of the first half of one of their matches. HT score 1-0 but lost the match 2-1. The highlights immediately cut to some rubbish like the Praesidium "discussion highlights" or somesuch

Sporting aren't relegation fodder, are at home and play the same sort of system we do, we will win hopefully, but he aren't going to humiliate them like some are expecting

Not saying that we will smash them...
but considering ...

- we've had week to prepare, they played on Saturday
- in next game we can take very easy, cause we play last-place-pile-of-flaming-shit that is Leicester
- they have 3 wins, 2 losses (conceding 3 and 2) and a draw (conceded 3) in Portugese league, we have 4 wins 2 draws in EPL; once let opposition score more than 1 goal
- they sold their biggest stars in the summer; we lost 0 and gained number of starters

... I can understand why people would be optimistic...

When it comes to European competitions, I see that most supporters of most clubs are not very patriotic and I think that's wrong. We should wish for our compatriots' success. So come on Eric Dier, fly high the Portuguese flag! 💪😏🇵🇹

What do our resident Portuguese fans think?
Given how unimpressive sporting lisbon look this season (they lost a few good players that weren't properly replaced), how their defence is mostly yuck, other than Pedro Porro.... and so is their defensive/central midfield, plus the extra days rest you had, if Tottenham don't win this you should be relegated to the Conference League with immediate effect 🤷‍♂️ With Mourinho back as manager too! 🤢

Hurricane hitting Lisbon tomorrow?

That pitch looks decidedly dodgy. They've marked out the halfway line the wrong way round and why is Kane playing the game at WHL, in last year's shirt, when everyone else is in Lisbon (that IS the south stand, isn't it?)

ps - looks like someone's smashed the goal to bits. Otherwise, great graphic.

I did a five week course in Lisbon in August 1992. I got friendly with a mad Celtic fan who wanted to go to every match he could in the city, so that meant Benfica, Belenenses and Sporting of course. He was particularly keen on them as they play in the same shirts as Celtic do.

So off we went to the old Estádio José Alvalade to see them play Boavista I think it was. Back then, it was still easy just to rock up and get tickets on the door and once in we could wander about and pick our spot, it wasn't a big turnout.

So anyway, we went behind the goal, looking for their end. There was a posse calling themselves "La Torcida Verde" who were the best on offer, but even so, they weren't much to write home about. About thirty or forty lads who only made any noise when instructed to do so by their leader who had a loudhailer. He didn't really need it, they were completely silent the rest of the time , he could have whispered what to sing next and we'd all have heard it.

It was an awful game. Every time a player went down, which was frequent, a team of four came rushing on - two in tracksuits, two in suits and ties. They took ages each time. The most noteworthy thing about our whole time there was this fan club leader chap, who looked the spitting image of a beleaguered thirty-something pen-pusher from an office supplies company. When he wasn't loudhailing he sat down with his back to the game and started bashing away on an old Olivetti portable typewriter. The whole match. He can't have seen more than a couple of minutes of action, such as it was, the whole time we were there.

Very, very odd experience.
