It really isn't. That is just not true at all. I mean, have you only just started watching football? Nearly every league winner and most top 4 finishers each season are built on a tight defence. Leicester basically won the league by grinding out 1 nil wins most weeks, it was their defence and Kante (DM) that won them the league, and Vardy/Mahrez nicking goals. Woolwich have challenged by having a tight defence. Look at Liverpools defence this season. Best in the league and they sit top. City's success was built on defence and suffocatign teams and letting their attack destroy teams. Now City have been struggling, guess why? Because their defence fell apart and they started conceding goals.

Positions are rarely decided on goal difference let alone goals scored. .Teams that win things are almost always built on a tight defence. Hence why if we are controlling games and rarely concede, you always have a chance in games.

Our defence gave us the platform to win last night, we defended well, kept a clean sheet and scored one goal, and voila we won. If we had kep a clean sheet against Newvastle, we'd have won. We conceded two goals and lost. That win last night doesn't happen if you are conceding multiple goals every game as we have found. Just look at our recent results under Ange, conceding at least 2 goals a game and we've basically lost every game despite scoring in every game too.

If you are constantly conceding goals, and then you have a period where your attack is misfiring, as a team you are fucked. You will lose lots of matches.

So what you are saying is just plainly not true if you want to be a successful team. It's about getting your defence tight, to give you a platform to score goals and win games. Of course the more you score, the better, but not at the cost of your defence. It's football 101 and nobody is successful conceding lots of goals over a league campaign no matter how many you score.

To say that being involved in high scoring games each week is preferable to having a tight defence and being able to grind out wins 1-0 when not at your best, is just laughable.
Again, such an essay from someone bemoaning our lack of chance creation all first half.

This is where reality and fantasy collide.

Johnson (i think) is our top goalscorer and last night by hugging the right touchline pulled their defender away opening up space for Solanke to run into before tracking down that Porro pass. But don't let's talk about off the ball tactical moves like that.

Werner from my perspective played well, made runs at and around the Scouse defence and made an actual impact. Son was fucked, and for me Werner should have come on earlier.

In a threadbare squad any fan that suggests that "only if Werner and Johnson are not around" isn't a fan, just a boneheaded idiot.

If only "fans" like you were not around this forum, TFC would be a lot better place.
The fella wanted Woolwich to win the league over City last season mate, i wouldn't worry about him.....🤷‍♂️

Just makes me laugh that Slot comes out saying we got lucky this time.

Only the version of us getting lucky includes a goal chalked off from a guess, VVD getting away with a red card and Jones getting away with about 5 yellow cards.

They are basically saying if we get one call we should consider ourselves lucky
In the history of football Liverpool have never lost a game because the other team were better on the day. He fits right in.

"It really isn't. That is just not true at all."

I stated to you the format of the Premier League competition, and your telling me it's 'not true at all'?

"Leicester basically won the league by grinding out 1 nil wins most weeks, it was their defence and Kante (DM) that won them the league"
Here's some more facts for you: Spurs, and Man Utd (who finished 5th) conceded less goals than Leicester when they won the League. We also scored more goals than them.

I totally agree with Ange's view re VAR in football. I'd get rid of it except for goal line decisions. Perhaps fully automated offside is worth trying.

On the Bergvall incident ... Ange's view is debateable. A counter view is that Bergvall's tackle merited a yellow as it was dangerous play. Advantage was the right decision, but Ange stating it is only "cynical" fouls that are punished is not relevant and is not the language used in the laws of the game. I think we got lucky on that one but, as others have said, unluckly in his first yellow. And Liverpool got fewer cards than they deserved also.
I wonder if VAR also has a quiet chat after unjust first yellows, "by the way mate, no contact from Bergvall there for that first yellow, just sayin..."
