Stan Bowles

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

For us older generation posters, its sad to read this sort of thing about someone who lit the game up with his skill and sense of sheer enjoyment of playing. Back in the days when football was fun as well as a business.

Absolutely criminal that he did not win more caps for his country. But then as now the FA only want yes men in their ranks and the national team suffered as a result.

Him,Tony Currie and Alan Hudson, all very similar. Too maverick for England. Such a waste
But as spurs fans you only have to remember our Hoddle was so under valued.
I remember being in the springbok pub(think that's what its name was,it was a deer of some description anyway) having a pre match beer before we played QPR one year and Stan Bowles came in. Had a quick look round and left and went in the bookies opposite.Pub and Bookmakers. Normal for a lot of his generation.

If you are referring to the one just up the road form loftus road then yes it's the Springbok..
Which makes sense as its on South Africa road..

Got a mate who's been a season ticket holder for as long as I can remember and used to meet him in there for a pre match drink whenever we played them..

I remember when they, QPR, were flying high in 76 wasn't it. Dave Thomas was a decent player too, socks rolex around his ankles.
Bowles, although a good player, had a rep as a bit of a diving cunt though.

Edit: Franny Lee was way ahead of his time. He was doing the' trip yourself up with one foot behind the other' trick in the 70's.

Football was so much different then. I sometimes wonder, what with football becoming non contact, if the skilful players of the 70's were much better than their counterparts today.

Gerry Francis played for them as well.
Not sure whether the skillful players were better then, but I personally rate George Best as the greatest of any generation.
Phil Parkes, Don Givens, Leach, Don Masson, Dave clement...

Edit, I meant would todays skilful players last 5 mins with the tackles that were allowed.
It was common practice for players like Jimmy Case, Hunter, Harris etc to do a skilful player right off and much more skulduggery went on.

Sad news indeed. Agree with the above - there was some real characters around in the 70s who were described as mavericks - worth the admission money just to see them warm up. My personal fav as a non-Spurs player was Rodney Marsh - shame he turned out to be a bit of a bellend.

Dier would have loved it back then...
