In regards to our usual late transfer dealings does everyone always believe its our/Levy's fault?

Most of the better players who end up at Spurs don't come to us because we're Spurs, they come because the 5 teams in the league who could pay more or the 10 or so elite European clubs don't want them. We Are as someone above put it still in that second tier or B+ club when all players want to go to the category A club.

Especially with agents as they are and late business doing the merry go round effect I'd say players often want to hold out to the last opportunity before commuting to us, wether that be for more money or assumed silverware.

Not ending on a downer as that's changing, we play the best football in the league, rotate the team well, pay well above most other teams, have a world class coach and facilities and soon one of the swankiest stadiums in world football with an increased revenue and probably wages if we want to keep our elite players, along with champions league football and hopefully more challenging for titles to come.

Apologies for the long post, waiting for my pie to cook (steak and ale obviously).:pochsmirk:
Very well put

Yes everything seems hazy , complicated , messy even archaic with our so called dealings .
We are becoming a bit of a parody at this point.

I don't know whether we're an easy target for these sorts of headlines or we genuinely are this fucking scattergun in our dealings.

I'll never complain about the way Levy runs the club and the direction he's taking us in but my god he's fucking frustrating at times.

It's professional football, so spending abilities matter. But there is no relationship between transfer spending and success. Clubs able to support higher wage bills generally do better. But there are also clear inefficiencies. You can spend less and do better than rivals by recruiting smarter and having a high quality academy. SAF's MUFC teams, Klopp's Dortmund, Sevilla all have spent less than their rivals on transfers, but won titles and trophies. They built better squads by being smarter.

We finished higher than our wage bill 9 of the last 10 years by being smarter than our rivals in exactly this way.

It's a seller's transfer market this summer. Europe has a PL tax and there are few players for sale who can help us right now. Possibly none if we don't want to pay that tax.
Except that the teams who regularly win titles spend big.
Let me know when you come up with a team who regularly wins titles without spending big. Utd still spent big under saf.
Your other examples are from abroad & not that recent.

The polarisation on here is incredible. Neither side willing to consider the grey area, all just black and white.

Harks back to the Redknapp should have never been fired / AVB love in days.... except then we where getting dicked on regularly by the competition instead of coming off the back of our best season in quarter of a century!

I've been reasonably chilled about the lack of signings, i think mostly its due a reduction in my expectations for the coming season. Taking the amount of transition and financial obligations into consideration i think we will be very fortunate not to see a drop in form and i dont expect us to be up there competing for the title again. Ultimately i'm happy to bide my time and allow the project to continue to grow.

I'm not sure how much you read, but that's plenty of similar posts to what you just put.

It's more a case of there being plenty of balanced posts, but they are being interpreted as polar extremes by people with unpopular opinions

Yeah it does - basically "let us know if you accept an offer, as we might bid more"
Why though? What sense does that make?

You'd have to think Mahrez would be a good addition for us so why on Earth are we not bidding if we hold any interest.

The only reason I can think of is we are genuinely planning on leaving everything to the last minute in hope of a deal but IF someone else bids on him before then we want to know so we don't miss out. Which is ridiculous if true.

Because our main target is probably someone else (Barkley I assume), but if we can't get him then we want to be kept informed about Mahrez.

We won't buy both of them.

In the nightclub metaphor, we're the lad who would rather wait until 3am to pull the fed up stunner, rather than settle for a slap at 9pm or go home early with a 6

Yeah i guess so.

I dont really understand why most people wouldn't default to a position of objective optimism when it comes to football? If your gonna to invest so much time and energy into something you love then at least try and enjoy it?!

"Yeah but we care TOO much."
