That could well be true, I know they're getting a shitload for the current site and it was going to get AM out of a financial hole.I think they kept that stand that's why it's such an odd shape and has huge gaps at that end. They just removed the lower tier.
Also why it was so cheap is becuase the building company wanted the land in the centre of Madrid to develop and Atletico were £500m in debt.
So they got it, and in return for the old stadium land they would build Atletico a stadium at basically cost.
Didn't the fans go mad about the 12 mile move and challenge the building company saying it was illegal for them to build anything higher than 4 floors in Madrid city centre.
Took it to court.
Would have meant FCC, the building company, losing a lot of projected revenue and make the move doubtful, as Atletico couldn't afford the build.
