Transfers Summer 2019 transfer thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

The TLDR version:
Wanda was originally the wife of Maxi Gomez, a senior Argentine player at Sampdoria. When a young Mauro Icardi made the move from Barcelona to Sampdoria Gomez decided to be kind to the 18 year old and let him stay at his house to start with. Fastforward a bit and Mauro and Wanda begin an affair that breaks the Gomez's marriage. Mauro ends up stealing Maxi's wife and kids (he has Maxi's kids names on his arm). As a result Mauro is banned from the national team through order of Maxi's good friend Leo Messi.

Fast forward to now and Wanda is Mauro's agent and an "expert" on a Milan based football show. And she has spent the entire season throwing shit at the other Inter players and the Inter fans, which forces a wedge between Mauro and his teammates that eventually ends with him losing the Inter captaincy. And now the situation is so toxic that a move away from Inter has to happen.

Wanda is essentially a psycho agent and Mauro goes along with everything.

I mean, that's one version of the story.

The other version is that Maxi Gomez was having an affair with the housekeeper while Wanda was pregnant, and then was sued for sexual harassment. In the divorce, the court sided with Wanda and found Maxi as the one acting unfaithfully. Messi is Maxi's friend however and that group has made sure to slander Wanda / Mauro whenever possible.

Now, Icardi is insane in his own right and so is Wanda it appears. But Maxi (and via Messi) painting himself as the good boy victim in all this is madness.

Oh there are certainly two sides to the story, and as you said Maxi is most likely not a saint either.

I'm just retelling the story as I have been told it.

Where's John Terry when you need him?

He'd sort her out.

Also - Argentinian soccer in general is an utter disaster. The Maxi / Mauro / Wanda love triangle is just symptomatic of the complete train wreck it is.

And of course Maradona is involved in the story ... because he has to be.

And it's telling that two of the best managers in the world are Argentinian (Simeone and Pochettino) and neither are ever even remotely linked to taking the job in any serious way. They are both way too smart to even consider dealing with that toxic cesspool right now. The entire AFA probably has to be remade from the ground up.

It's a shame, because there's enough talent there to compete for and win nearly every tournament they enter.

According to this article, Poch is going nowhere regardless of transfer activity (so that's a good thing and the main thing I was worried about) but it also mentions that Poch has essentially accepted the fact we cannot compete in financial terms with Pool or City.

Not sure how much of this piece is guesswork or inside knowledge but essentially it is saying that Poch knows overall we are regressing in the league and in general, despite our champions league run and that we need reinforcements to sustain what success we do have (qualifying for the CL.)

Because that feeling would be wrong (although it would be funny watching people fall over themselves to defend Levy again) but the reality is, I love my club and that happening would set us back years.

Some of us are just concerned that history is going to repeat itself.
I can't see it this time simply because the stadium needs filled to really make a profit. No point spending close to £1billion on a ground for it to do half empty because you thought your penny pinching would go unnoticed and fans would constantly turn up to see an inferior team.

Surely the smart thing to do financially is to strike while the feel good factor (possibly a wrong choice of words, but you get the drift) of getting to the CL final is still around? Surely the excitement of the squad making strong statements of positive intent would only boost finances? Even if it means spending a bit of money.

Okay, but what about the Maradona thing?

I agree with you but am not sure Levy sees it that way, the stadium to both him and ENIC is about more than football, it's an entertainment venue, hence why he has arranged numerous events outside of football to take place already (and I imagine more will be coming in the future) so financially it will make money regardless, he also knows that for the first few seasons alone, people will fill the place just so they can see it and witness it all.

I do agree with you though and I think if Levy doesn't take advantage it will backfire on both him and ENIC.

Poch took time out before becoming a manager to get an MBA so whilst he doesn't have Levy's practical experience of finance he's perfectly capable of understanding Spurs financial situation.

Not sure we are regressing but certainly true we want some reinforcements, and I think Levy knows that too - in order to make the £1bn investment in stadium and training facilities produce big money he needs to get lots of paying spectators and good runs in CL so buying a few players is a business necessity. That's why we will buy this TW

It will make money, if it is full.

If Levy lets the club go into a freefall that costs the manager and the top players, including a talisman like Kane, what will attendances be?

I think he's savvy enough to realise he has a golden opportunity to deliver the success to keep punters happy and ENIC happy. And happy paying punters are ultimately what keeps everyone happy. Especially for sales of tickets, merchandise and match day package.
