Transfers Summer 2019 transfer thread

Doing a Leeds is long gone for most Prem clubs, the amount of money pouring in and the availability of refinancing puts paid to that. However FFP is important, not that we should worry considering our prudence but that is a factor and hopefully FFP will show teeth with City’s dodgy practice.

I agree, no sane bank would call in the debt of a football club - just charge them higher interest rates and take the money that rolls in.

That wasn't my point though, we and other clubs can't afford to be reckless with money - simply because you end up locked into huge contracts for players that you then can't shift; see Woolwich.

Bit harsh, Messi wasn’t great either, Argentina are like England of old, playing the best players not the best team. Lo Celso is not a winger but that’s what he was played as against Columbia or at least that’s what it looked like.

Whoever we pick up Poch will use wisely I feel.
Have you seen him play... I don't watch a lot off Spanish football but listen to a Spanish football podcast and I can't remember him being mentioned at all, good or bad.

Excellent point. You can't judge someone on a YouTube video just like you can't judge someone after watching just one game. I've known about Lo Celso for a couple of years now, actually mentioned on this forum last summer that we should take a punt on someone like him based on his raw abilities but hat was when he was a £25m player, not one deemed £60m+.

I really like him but it's big money and we need to be sure he's the right player. I think he's worth a punt in the £50m ball park, jury is still out about the £60m+ figures we are seeing.

A few times, I watch La Liga quite a bit, he is a busy body type of player, more De Bruyne than Eriksen in style from impression.

Only saw the highlights of Argentina-Columbia but it looked like a typical shithouse South American game, not the game to judge someone.

Makes me laugh when people think £70m is a lot for a player in modern football, Liverpool spent £67m on a goalkeeper, United have just bid £55m for Bissaka.

£70m is nothing in modern football, especially for a club looking to win trophies but I am sure that won't stop people thinking we will "do a leeds" if we spend anymore than £40m on a player.

Laughable really, you have some of our supporters wanting us to win the league or the CL but the second you mention that will require us changing our approach to transfers and spending more money they start getting offended (even though our manager has said the exact same thing.)

£70m is still a hell of a lot, even for a team that has been so prudent and makes so much cash. Nothing against spending that on 1 or 2 players but they need to be of the highest quality and young enough to have resale value.

Only 4 players over 70m ever, only 7 over 60m.

It isn't normal yet,

Allison is no better than decent....their defence benefits collectively rather than stand outs, and despite the VVD wankfest he’d be fuck all without Robertson.

Salah scored 20 less goals with no injuries
Come on, it's getting pathetic. Why do you have such a hard time admitting van Dijk is a great player? He performs for both club and country and was fantastic at both Celtic and Southampton as well

Players with far higher reputations than NDombele have come to the PL and been utter dogshit

He isn't guaranteed to be a hit, so we have to be cautious.....at some point the deal won't make sense

Yeh i get we won’t hit £80-90m but the guy is incredible as a player, he has everything, not just his performances in the CL but domestically as well. This is not a normal player we are bidding for, he could realistically be our best player in 1-2 seasons.

Of course he could fail, so could De Jong and De Ligt but we are talking about that level or higher even.

That's the problem really. Impossible to win titles & CL regularly without spending a lot. But most don't want to be that type of team but do want to win these things. So realistically we are saying we are happy with top 4 & no titles. Considering where we have been, that's a very good achievement for us.

But if we want to go to the next level we will have to become 1 of those teams that spend a lot. It is the crossroads many have spoken of this summer.
I'd guess we will end up being somewhere in the middle between barely spending & spending big. Which won't reveal much. But we shall see.

The highest quality players cost more than £70m mate, I think the problem is because we haven't been spending for so long some of the prices seem absurd, I mean, in reality they are absurd but that's just how the market is now, inflated.

Clubs want what they want for their players and they are under no pressure to sell either because they know that another club will likely pay the price to get the player.

That's why the transfer brinksmanship doesn't work anymore and it's another reason why deadline day has been shit for years now.
