Those got us to a champions league final. I agree with everything except the use of the word desperate. An upgrade on paper isn't always an upgrade in play. We know what we got and so on.
Indeed they did. But with a very large slice of lady luck if we're being totally honest.

We also lost TWENTY games this season across all competitions. That's just dreadful no matter what way it's dressed up.

If we go into next season with Trippier still our first choice right back, Vic and Dier our only options at DM and no attacking additions whatsoever, especially now that Llorente is gone, we're going to struggle massively.

Onomah is just a classic case of thinking he'd made it before he had IMO. If he had the same mentality as Winks for example, he'd probably be in and around the first team by now.

You got any evidence for this theory Tom? Genuine question.

because nothing I heard, read or saw corroborated this. Onomah was training with the first team for three years and in that time got 20 minutes of PL football, and 3/4 starts as a winger (he's a CM). Then the final straw came after he was one of the best players when England won the U20 WC, Poch took him on the pre season tour and played TAB in CM and Onomah as a winger again. I think he begged to go on loan because he was just desperate to play football.

Personally I wish we'd kept him here and Poch had shown the patience and indulgence with him that he did with Sissoko, let Onomah stink for two seasons if necessary, and we might have a midfielder who can play football by now and saved ourselves 55m in fee and wages.

Not really, just buttering up the fans for when we sell him and letting others know he is looking to sell.

I don't know either way but players rarely miss out on their bonuses these days.

But late for Aulas to let others know hes for sale as Aulas has namechecked most big sides including ManU Juventos PSG and Madrid as bidders before.

Still a last chance for him to magic up another bid I guess.

and it keeps fans happy - he asked to leave, we couldn't keep him etc. Its a common thing for owners to put out and it means fans are unhappy with players.

Again I am not saying this has happened but I would be really surprised if he doesn't get his loyalty bonus. He doesn't need to force this through as yet.

The bloke has been saying for months now about how all the big clubs in Europe are chasing him yet very few seem to have been properly in for him.

I fancy Rabiot, Milinkovic-Savic and Pogba have made Ndombele a plan B for most we may have been up against. Man U seem to be distracted by Wan-Bissaka and De Ligt seems to be doing the same for Juve, PSG etc.

The big teams have thrown insane money around the last 1-12 months and I think Aulas could be a good out of luck this time around. I fancy this may take a little time but with Pogba saying he's open for a change etc the big boys are vulturing their pickings elsewhere.

£60m will be the winner I reckon. Yes it's a lot of money but we didn't spend last summer and we have about £50m more than we probably expected because of the European progress Poch and the boys achieved when it looked like we were dead and buried numerous times throughout the campaign.

I don't think Onomah ever showed Winks' talent level. But he had mentality enough to play for Poch as an 18 year old, so that speaks well of him.

Only rarely will our academy produce players of the necessary quality to be long-term players for us. A much greater number will be professionals elsewhere and all we can do is make a buck off them in a sale and wish them the best. So it appears to be with Onomah.

Onomah was by far the more talented player through the later development years U18+. Winks is a very easy to like player, busy, tidy, metronomic. But Onomah could look like a different class to anyone on the pitch at times in youth and U21 football, as he did in the U20 WC final. He's got some rare qualities but they are bundled in with some less aesthetic ones, he can look lethargic at times, he can look awkward at times. he's not a busy fucker. If you want a profile, I'd liken him to a Pogba type, played the right way in the right set up he could look regal, but when things aren't going so well, he could look lazy and clumsy.

Onomah's performance ceiling was/is higher than Winks, but Winks will give you a guaranteed level of performance much more consistently.

It's a shame Onomah's not French because he'd have had about 150 games under his belt by now and he'd have learnt lessons and sharpened up his game - a good example is someone NDomele or even Sangare at Toulouse.

Re loyalty bonus - he will get a signing on bonus at Spurs plus a much higher salary. Probably find that Lyon do not pay Ndombele his 5% but Spurs pay a bigger signing on bonus and much higher wages fund the rest.

It's all smoke and mirrors so Ndombele will be much better off after the move, but Lyon will say they haven't paid it ( correctly)

Just what I've seen from him over the past 2 seasons tbh mate, particularly last season at Villa (only seen Wednesday a couple of times this season)

I think he really does lack the never say die and brave attitude Poch demands, particularly from youth players it would seem. Onomah has a lot of ability and often starts games very well but then as soon as something goes wrong or he loses the ball a few times, his head drops and he goes into Ozil mode for the rest of the game. Something has to have changed because as you say he was starting Europa League games and regularly making PL matchday squads in Pochs second season. I know the argument can be made he was played out of position etc but I honestly think he'd have been filleted alive if we was put into central midfield.

I think Sissoko is just a prime example of how if your attitude is right, Poch won't discard you. Even though he's woefully technically deficient, the work he's put in has meant Poch has persevered with him.
KWP is another example of this. He may be weak in stature and probably won't be good enough long term, but he's a fighter and will chase every lost cause, which I can only assume is the main reason he's been kept around so long.
