We all have our difference of opinion, but I'd consider this our best 11 as of right now.

That's a very good 11 on paper, but clearly one that's a few players away. Despite his moments of madness here and there, and we can certainly improve of him, I think Aurier is better than what some think and don't seem him as an urgent upgrade. We're crying out for a top centre-back. Toby isn't what he was and then the rest are a pretty average bunch. Ndombele is massively inconsistent and Lo Celso seems injury hit, and I definitely think we need another top player to compete for a place in the middle of the park. Lloris is past his best and will need replacing but again, I don't see this as urgent as some other positions.

This summer I can see Alli, Winks, Foyth and Lamela moving on to raise some transfer money. Possibly Bergwijn and Aurier too. As I've said previously I just don't see Kane going, even if he does want to leave. I can't see him pushing for a move in regards to actually handing in a transfer request. And his price, age and injury record I think rules him out from every club excluding one or two.

The opposition can easily clog the middle and the absence of one or both full backs would really screw us over.

I prefer a team that is balanced and can readily attack any weakness of the opposition i.e. attack through the flanks or middle, short passes or long balls etc

Get where you're coming from.

2 points:
1. Under Poch, before Son was established first XI, we were quite successful with Eriksen Alli Lamela quite central behind Kane, with Rose & Walker providing width.
2. Sabitzer's versatility means we can change our style mid-match. If my 'Plan A' isn't working (eg full backs dysfunctional or injured), you can switch to Son LW and Sabitzer RW. Btw he is 27, not 29 as you said.
 
Just thought I’d say that current signing/tactical discussion is really interesting and I am enjoying reading it. Keep up the good work chaps.

Personally I would love to see Sabitzer but looking at the current state of our midfield, it’s a pretty straightforward upgrade!

That young RB would be good but I agree with Igula Igula ( :pochshock: ) that we would still need a first team RB.

Sonny and Reguilón, let´s face it, are pretty much our first team players on the left side - which makes it very strong going forward, but it also creates the need for compensating it somewhere else. When you think about it, though, we don´t have an identity on our right side. Bale took some time to get his place in the team - before him, Bergwijn, Lucas and Lamela all played there -, and we rotate a lot between Aurier and Doherty - and now Tanganga.

If we sign him, we´ll have the opportunity to use Sabitzer wide (on the right). He could be a major step up for this team, a creative force from a position we´ve been struggling quite a bit. In terms of structure, it would allow us to play a better defender behind him. Unlike Son (a winger/forward), Sabitzer would be a midfield/winger; unlike Reguilón (a really aggressive LB), the RB would be positioned in a more safe manner - which would definitely help our defensive structure. It´s difficult to predict the whole back line, so just have in mind this idea of having Reguilón on the left and an option able to compensate things on the right. With Sabitzer (and without Bale), my team from midfield on would be something like:

Hojbjerg-Ndombele
Sabitzer-Lo Celso -Sonny
Kane.

- As I mentioned before, Sabtizer has a rare ability to create (a lot) from wide positions. He played as a RW for most of his career (his numbers while playing there are really solid) and his engine and hard working without the ball would really help our pressing game. He should be looked mainly as a creator, a goal thread, though; in my opinion, he should play closer to the goal.

- Lo Celso is dynamic enough to lead the press centrally, while also intelligent enough to eventually drop deep to occupy spaces left by Ndombele - remember, we are yet to see Ndombele and Lo Celso playing a good amount of games together after the French found his place next to Hojbjerg; they could help each other.

- Lo Celso and Sabitzer together pressing in the final third could really work in our favor - while also releasing some of the load for Ndombele and Hojbjerg behind them.

- Sonny is a LW/Forward. In this formation, depending on the opposition and the score, we could have him a bit closer to Kane, with Lo Celso covering one of the wide zones. Without traumas, we could easily move his positioning and set up to counter perfectly.

Sabitzer's versatility means we can switch from Plan A to Plan B during a match... unlike this season where I feel we're reliant on one plan.

Both of our proposed systems look great on paper, but 3 signings needed:

Some good posts on Sabitzer. Much like Hojbjerg, I think he's a model pro and captain material. Never bad to bring another like that into the squad. Versatile, brings goals to the side and has better long-distance passing than any of our midfield players. Nothing's a dead cert but you'd hope he'd make the transition well.

It seems like a no-brainer to me, considering the amount of game time we're currently giving Sissoko and Winks.

Since I haven't watched any Bundesliga, he failed to turn up how? Was he not showing for the ball, looking uncomfortable in possession, sloppy passing, et cetera?

Because considering I put a LOT of the blame for the dysfunction of the past two years on us losing and not adequately replacing Dembele, I have a lot of time to give to a midfielder that isn't a consistent goal or assist threat.

I noticed that in the CL game recently. He seemed a bit anonymous, but not sure if it was being isolated by opposition or just not showing for the ball. He also didn't produce much when he did get it. It's only one game, but it was a big game.

It’s hard to describe. It’s like he’s not making an impact. He doesn’t do anything to hurt the team but he’s not doing much to help either. It’s like he’s just there. Against bayern he got subbed around the 70’ mark because of it. But I’ve also seen him play absolutely fantastic at times.
 
I think Sabitzer is highly unlikely. He may make a lot of football sense, but Levy will be sceptical of the value of a 27 year old.

OK, Levy had his arm twisted on Doherty but probably only because he was Premier league proven and gettable at a good price compared to the other younger RBs we were interested in. Wolves fans were telling us that he was worth twice what we paid. But look how that's worked out.

I wonder if the Sabitzer rumours are there because he's a player Mourinho and the club can just about both get on board with, and we haven't yet had to negotiate the fee. Anyhow, I think it would need a big discount for us to get it done. The club will have other, younger, targets. Ones that probably Mourinho doesn't really want.

Very few if any sensible Wolves fans would have said Doherty was worth twice what we paid. Many spoke of his inability to play right back, and were said to be rubbing sore sounds in doing so. That was just buying a player not suitable for the step up, nor the position we bought him for.

I want to watch some of his games, but haven't gotten around to it.

To abuse the point I made earlier, we signed Paulinho because Dembele was getting stick for his lack of end-product.
