It's interesting to consider the loss/gain in other ways too: how much do we miss out on if we finish outside the top 4 (and don't win the EL) vs getting someone in to stop the rot ASAP?

I think, however, that's a moot point as Mourinho will almost certainly be given until the end of the season and I highly doubt we'd get anything other than a caretaker manager between now and then.
There is also the scenario that we fire mourinho, get a new manager but still miss out on CL and EL.

So we should stick with the current dud that has shown no ability to get us to where we want to be because of fear that we may fuck up his replacement and get an equally bad manager (although one that is guaranteed at the minimum to play better football)?

Tbh that's what I mean - in addition to Levy almost certainly holding on until summer before pulling the trigger (and I honestly believe he'll have been putting some feelers out the last couple of months) if we sacked him tomorrow then I don't see who the hell would come in and salvage top 4 or a EL win. Ledley as caretaker would be cosy for us as fans but I don't think it's a squad that can essentially run itself.

Maybe Benitez. Maybe. But I doubt he'd do it (again) like he did for Chelsea that one time.

Feel free to extrapolate all you want, but there is no guarantee that a new manager will get us into the CL and it shouldnt be taken for granted.

Of course there isn't a guarantee, I don't see anyone saying there is.

But we have seen that getting top 4 is not a pipe dream for Spurs and with a competent manager we can easily get there.

Konsa is a quite good young player. I think most villa fans, myself included, believe that he's our best cb currently (over Mings).

I believe he's contracted until 2023 with a club option for another (per transfermarkt). I know we are and have been interested in extending his contract since the summer.

With transfer talks, I think that he would be at least 40m and probably would go up if he went on to the Euros. To be completely honest, there should be much better value out there in Europe (specifically France) in terms of signing center backs.

Konsa seems like a decent guy to look at but if he is anything close to 40m that is an easy pass.

It’s not 20 million extra, we are paying that to Jose if he stays or goes that money isn’t going into transfers either way. It’s the 5 million extra you would worry about and that isn’t buying us much, if anything.

It’s £20m paying him to do nothing, maybe £5m compensation to the new manager as well as the new managers wages.

Sacking Jose and replacing him instantly means a cost, he’s paid and so is the new guy, agents etc

The last 'competent' manager was finding it increasingly difficult, finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th in his last 3 full seasons and left the team in 14th after 12 games.

The squad has been in decline for quite a while and the idea that we can easily get 4th is only a fan fiction.

Exclusive - Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have all been hugely impressed by the recent emergence of Schalke striker Matthew Hoppe.

Thrown in at the deep end to try and save a Schalke side who are rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga, the 19-year-old American has responded with five goals in just eight league starts, earning himself his first professional contract early in February.

Schalke found themselves with debts of close to £175m even before the COVID-19 outbreak crippled football's finances even more, and the belief across Europe is that they could be forced to hold a fire sale this summer to try and stay afloat.

There has also been murmurs of interest in fellow young stars Suat Serdar and Amine Harit, the latter of whom came close to joining Villarreal in the January transfer window.

It’s not only fan fiction, multiple managers have got us top 4 in the past 10 years.

Why is it so difficult for people to understand?

We have had a squad that was on the up over the last decade, largely propelled by the fortunate emergence of Harry Kane and then some great work from Poch.

We were on an upward trajectory and this culminated in a CL final.

Since we blew that the wheels have come off. That squad was shot to pieces.

We have tried to breathe new life into it with the signings of Ndombele, GLC and Reguilon and the hire of a "proven winner".

It has not been enough. Poch spoke of the painful rebuild himself, about the nice new furniture you need to put into a new house yet fans still blindly think this squad should be able to get top 4 with their eyes closed.

Wake up! You can argue that Jose isn't working or his football is shit but don't be blind to the fact that the painful rebuild is nowhere near complete.

Any new manager would do very well to get top 4 with this squad as things stand.

City, Liverpool, Chelsea, United and Leicester all have better first XI's than us right now.

Arguably we have more depth than Leicester but that is questionable since we just have a bloated squad of mediocrity.

Got to be away of getting rid of him without paying the remaining part of his contract ? Best Hope would be to sack him and hope he lands another job in China or ME where he’d get paid squillions.
Unless you are going to somehow convince Jose to actively break the law then there isn't.

Even with a break clause we would still be paying him his salary until he finds new work or the contract expires. but with a break clause we would probably pay less.

To avoid paying him in the event of gardening leave he would have to be found in breach of contract and the contract declared null and void.

No it’s not complete but we had a big window, probably the best I can remember at the club, we needed a DM, CB, RB, LB, AM, ST and we got all of them excepting the CB was inexperienced and Jose wanted Skriniar. To top this off Ndombele finally settled and sorted most of his fitness out so that’s 7 players alone compared to prior. This is the backing Poch was wanting but Jose got.

We pay Jose 15m a year because he is supposed to be better than Poch, A man who can make the team a sum of its parts. Yet we play crap football and get average results. We are being blown out of the water right now by Moyes and West Ham who have a far shitter squad.

I can accept we have one obvious weakness our CB’s but there is no excuse for the attacking football when you have what we have. Ok we have some average players in reserves we need to sell, so does it everyone else bar maybe City or Liverpool. The whole thing is excuses, excuses, excuses. Levy for once properly backed a manager, it’s on Jose to deliver.

I know it won't solve anything but that 'Van Dijk' figure would just help our defense so much
They'd have the experience and the calming presence to ensure that we don't drop too deep and that we can deal with attacks that can come our way.

I feel like we need 2 CB'S this Summer. 1 Leader (like Van Dijk) and perhaps 1 player.

That dominant CB will help change the mentality and hopefully the way we play

Van Dijk elevated Liverpool
Dias elevated City

Its not going to be a £20m player saying that. Quality costs but it'll be worth it.

True. Rodon looks like he has the whole skill set to be a top CB but we do need a leader, 3-4 years ago we had peak-Verts. Maybe go back in for Skriniar.
