Surely when you target these so-called top tier players you are assuming they back themselves?

No assumption required.

A variety of schools of though exist.

It's the reason WH and Palace are more likely to pick up Bowen, Eze, Elise etc. than us.

Players a tier above them that would consider being a bench player will have potential trophies as a key consideration and as said their patience will be bought by top-end wages in the meantime.

I"m not saying it's impossible, but we occupy an awkward niche.... A niche that left us signing Llorente, Jansen, N'obody, Bale & Vinicius in recent history. What often gets glossed over during this convo though is that at one point Poch also had Son, Lucas & Lamela sat on the bench. Even now we have Berg, Lucas (& Gil).....

Do you really think Jesus is looking at Kulusevski and thinking 'yep no way I can break into that team'?

I can't speak for the mentality of the individual player, but what we do know is that he's happy to leave City in search of a starting role.

He made 41 apps with 28 starts this past season..... So it's not like he's not finding significant time rotating for City.

I still assume players want to play for the best teams in the best competitions and at any top team you know you will have competition for places.

Why doesn't he just go to League 1 and score 50 goals if it's just about game time?

One would assume he wants a starting role AND a CL team..... Reports certainly suggest as much.

Could this be related to our recent FFP record? I remember reading somewhere that we had the potential to spend 400m and not breach the rules.

Looks like we are trying to capitalise on this.
We are in a great position. Conte. CL. Stadium open.FP room. My view has always been that ENIC will sell us for around £5B. Chelsea selling for £4.25B means this is achievable if we can elevate the club to equal status by winning titles.

If we spend £200-£250M we can bridge much of the gap to Liverpool and City and challenge for the title, CL etc. The club's profile and value increase even further and ENIC get their investment back and more. This is great news.

Well that rules out Woolwich.

I would suggest WH/Palace get those names mentioned because they are willing to pay more for riskier punts on lower league talent, whereas Spurs with aspirations of title challenges and CL generally want to buy 'proven' talent.

Brilliant, and to publicly announce it in this way and at this time is a show of intent. We mean business.
Good point. On the one hand you'd think we'd keep it quiet as now clubs know we have more money. so might try and charge more. MInd you, they already know we have money to be fair. But announcing it means that players know we are serious about challenging under Conte. It helps us compete for the best players that otherwise might go to our competitors.

Yup... Said as much above somewhere.

Sess - 30m
Gil - 20m + Lamela @7m
Reg - 30m
Emerson - 25m
Sanchez - 40m

vs

Eze - 16m
Olise - 8m
Bowen - 20m
Benrhama - 20m

These latter players signs these deals in hope of max game-time with a view of using these clubs as a stepping stone.
