As said earlier; if they fuck up with whom and when they replace Rodgers, then it's entirely possible; so why is discussing that prospect not "valid"?

Because it's 5 games in to the season & they have a top half level squad of players who (minus Fofana who was injured anyway) got to a ECL semi final last season and finished 8th. The likelihood of them being poor enough to get relegated is pretty low when you look at some of the other sides in the league.

Of course you can discuss the prospect .. but I'm not ready to throw them in with Portsmouth just yet when I really don't think relegation is happening for them.

And who exactly is that LCB that is on our books whose development Lenglet would block?
At the very least Davies (a season more of starting prob makes him a better player) but it’s more the opportunity cost - we loaned Lenglet instead of buying a player for the future. I also get that we took a stab at bastoni and Gvardiol but they are unlikely to be available next summer either. We should have (IMO) gone for someone else this window.

So just buy someone for the sake of buying someone, even if they don't fit the mould and quality of player we are looking for, huh? That's not a good way to spend our money methinks.

Compiled this list of players being linked to Spurs this summer window. No wonder the press get it "right" at times

A creative midfielder can’t do much for us if we can’t get him the ball. Conte’s system requires technical center backs that can both pass well and carry the ball forward. They need to be comfortable using their options to commit and beat the first man. We’ve seen Romero do it which is why (among other things) he’s our best defender. My hope is Lenglet can do it as well. Conte just has to be bold and play him ahead of Davies.

It’s no slight on the likes of Davies and Sanchez, but they haven’t displayed these abilities for the most part. Davies does like to carry the ball forward occasionally, but I wonder if Lenglet would be the more complete CB for our system.

This is for Conte to sort out, our pass maps over the past few games have been pretty embarrassing. Romero being out has definitely played a part, but we can’t always rely on him staying healthy.
What we learned today was that having CBs next to Dier who know how to possess and play progressive football makes the system function as intended.

IMO it's too early to rate transfer business for any team as it takes time for players to settle in and the team to gell.
DM"...while they never really managed to upgrade on last season's defence." Of course, Romero arrived last summer but they've listed him as incoming this summer, so adding him to Spence, Perisic and Lenglet certainly seems like an upgrade to me

With that in mind, Sportsmail has rated every single Premier League team's transfer business during an eventful window.

TOTTENHAM

Ins: Richarlison (Everton, £60m), Cristian Romero (Atalanta, £42.5m), Yves Bissouma (Brighton & Hove Albion, £25m), Djed Spence (Middlesbrough, £20m), Destiny Udogie (Udinese, £15m), Will Lankshear (Sheffield United, £2m), Tyrell Ashcroft (Reading, undisclosed), Josh Keeley (St Patrick's Athletic, undisclosed), Ivan Perisic (Inter Milan, free), Fraser Forster (Southampton, free), Clement Lenglet (Barcelona, loan)

Outs: Steven Bergwijn (Ajax, £28m), Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic, £6m), Tanguy Ndombele (Napoli, loan - £450,000), Jack Clarke (Sunderland, undisclosed) Sergio Reguilon (Atletico Madrid, loan), Giovani Lo Celso (Villarreal, loan), Destiny Udogie (Udinese, loan), Harry Winks (Sampdoria, loan), Joe Rodon (Rennes, loan)

Total spend: £164.5m

Spurs fans were left giddy when they took a change of pace and signed some players early on in the window but have grown frustrated with their side's lack of additions later on in the window. Spurs still seem short in midfield and in attack, while they never really managed to upgrade on last season's defence. Still, the summer additions look to be promising ones for Antonio Conte's men.

Window verdict: B

Not sure if he ever got discussed on here this summer, but a mate of mine just asked 'Whatever happened to that tricky dribbling winger who looked amazing at the last major tournament?' Turns out he meant Jeremy Doku, and I thought it was a good question so I looked him up - turns out he signed for Real Madrid last week, €35m. I haven't watched enough of him to judge, but seems cheap IF he lives up to all the hype from 2 years ago... Not sure why I'm posting that here - maybe as he could have been an option instead of James / Traore / ASM (if we were genuinely interested in any of them)... Though of course if there was any hint of interest from RM a few months ago, we presumably wouldn't have gotten a sniff anyway...

Football Insider have revealed that Manchester United paid a signing-on fee of £12m to Christian Eriksen to beat Tottenham to the Dane’s signature.

At one point earlier this summer reports indicated that Spurs were one of the favourites to snap up Eriksen on a free transfer after his contract with Brentford ran out (ESPN).

However, the fairytale return to North London did not materialise for the 30-year-old, who ended up linking up with Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

David Ornstein explained on The Athletic’s YouTube channel (starting at 7:20) back in July that the contract length and salary Eriksen demanded did not match what Spurs had in mind, which is why Antonio Conte’s men pulled the plug on the deal.

Fantastic post. Thanks for taking the time.
I was trying to keep up but instead I gave up.
Well done!

Would have loved Eriksen to come back.
He showed his worth today.

Bastoni has been truly shit this season, think we should avoid him. If Lenglet shows his value just buy him.

One player I have liked who could fill the AM role without costing a fortune is Alexis Mac Allister. I've been impressed with him everytime I've seen him. He plays similar to Eriksen. Picks the ball up from the defence, breaks into the box occasionally. Great feet and passing.

Totally under the radar signing. Should be keeping tabs on him. He should be in the Argie squad ahead of GLC.
I told you so. Make me the scout

Would have been a shrewd purchase. Takes penalties and free kicks.

Makes Brighton tick from the middle and can play AM.

Wouldn't cost a fortune. Get it done in January.

I can see Perisic getting a similar amount.
