Yeah, they've taken things to a higher level both in spending and success. And Grealish was very much an established star and kind of an exception in a lot of ways (during a summer in which they were also looking to make an exception for Kane).

And they've always spent very large money for players.

But I think the City story is less about one giant signing being "the guy" and more about maintaining a high level of investment in the completeness, fit for system, and prime-age of the squad. And they have been more committed to squad rotation than any other top PL club.

That's the winning attitude, for me, more than being willing to win the Declan Rice sweepstakes.

Can't stand them, but they're on another planet compared to the dumb-ass spending of Chavs, Man U, PSG & Barca.

I'm not really talking about who's worth what, or whether it's right to spend £100m on a player. More that we still shop in a different market to our big 6 rivals.

I'd like us to not spend some arbitrary amount for the sake of it, but have the financial capability and willingness to spend what the others do if and when needed.

E.g. We'd never spend the £100m+ needed for Kvaratashkelia, but all of our big 6 rivals would. That automatically excludes us from buying certain class of players.
Our squad would benefit much more from buying VDV + Maddison + Vic than just blowing it all on Kvara...you make those signings when you have a good established squad to take it to the next level.

Teams can afford to spend 100m on a player when they've had their recruitment sorted for years, which means they have other first XI positions nailed down, and plenty of good backups on the bench. Teams that have multiple fires to put out, that have incredibly thin squads and multiple points of weakness in their first XI have to stretch their money farther by necessity. So we don't buy Kvara for 100m, we get Solomon on a free, VDV for 40m, Maddison for 40m, and Vicario for 15m.
Hopefully we'll be there in a couple of years if we keep up with this level of recruitment.

Right... and when did I say buy Kvaratskhelia instead of those three? I'm talking about the fact that the very best talents in world football are always off limits to us, and if/when we can finally compete with the other big 6 on that front.

Still proper shitting it about a Romero injury. Hoping we haven't decided that Dier will be 3rd choice because we could shift Sanchez and not him, end of the day I understand we have decided to recoup our losses for Sanchez but entrusting the backup role to either Dier, who is easily our worst defender in this system, or Phillips/Dorrington, a pair of teenagers, doesn't fill me with confidence. Takes a real generational talent to cope at PL level at 18 years of age in defence.

if it isn't working, there is the option of a 6 month contract

Jérôme Boateng is without a club (35), Phil Jones (31/HG), Steven Caulker! (31/CT), Axel Tuanzebe (25/HG)

Since last season we have lost Clement Lenglet Japhet Tanganga Joe Rodon Davinson Sanchez, Djed Spence, Sergio Reguilon, Harry Winks, Harvey White, Tanguy Ndombele, Lucas Moura, Arnaut Danjuma and Harry Kane ......... maybe Hugo Lloris to follow ?

Some may come back. vast majority will not.

Big change in the squad
So who else is there left to flog off?

Lo Celso? But I got the impression that he's in Anges plans. After the Fulham game I wouldn't be surprised if he's not anymore.
And Eric Dier who seems happy to lift salary and do duck all.

Man City won a treble by breaking the british transfer record and let's be honest, Haaland was a 100m+ signing that just happened to be largely agent fees due to a clause. He was extremely expensive.

85m on a CB this season as well.
City have perfected transfers the last few seasons. They’re spending big on 1 or 2 players in key positions every year and strengthening their starting 11. Seems like every new signing eventually makes their way into the starting 11. They’ve also been selling big as well. Think they’ve had net costs of between 100-150m every year the last few years but they’ve been winning trophies consistently. That’s where we need to get to

Sanchez is gone, and as much as I am glad he has finally left....why now, and what cbs are we left with now ?? Its worrying to say the least, we are very short in that area now

Again People are hailing Levys Masterclass.

How soon we forget.

Hire Mourinho, give him Sanchez, Rodon and Dier as CBs. He asked for Kim Min-Jae at 15 million maximum, Levy said No. Fans, " Jose doesn't work with Youth, he needs alot of money". His MF is reliant on Ndombele, Winks, Lo Celso, PEH and Moura. We have a Golden Boot winner and highest assist striker pairing in the history of the EPL. But we play defensive football so he Gets fired before a cup final.

Hired Nuno as last resort, dismal flop.

Hires Conte, Conté says I need Bastoni, Bremer, a few RWB and LWB options....etc. Has to live with Sanchez, Davies, Dier, Sess, Doherty, Emerson 1.0. Managers to get Emerson playing good football despite us Supporters throwing tantrums. Openly states he didn't want Spence. Has to have a midfielder protecting his Defenders at all times, so Skipp and PEH are forced to play in order to be more defensive. Still has the same midfield with the exception of Bentancur and Kulusevski. We in the top 5 highest scoring teams in the EPL. Gets us to top 4 despite these players. Supporters Verdict... Conté Plays Defensive Football that will never win anything.

Ange gets hired. We have VdV and Romero as CB pairing, Udogie as LB and Porro as RB. Now we can attack using Maddison as 10 and Sarr 8 they both are high up but aren't needed to come back to defend as much because of a Ball playing defence. Ange gets lauded and Levy is a genius.

Oh I agree 100%. Our cheap players have almost always been our best players.

Just feels like an aritifical upper limit on who we buy. Our record signing is £60m Richarlison (sigh), while every other big six club has signed a player for £100m, some more than one.

I sometimes wish that we could be credible destinations for players like Kvaraskhelia, Osihmen, Rice etc., instead we always have to hope that we can sneak in and grab the likes of Bissouma and Maddison, who thankfully are every bit as good as any signing the other big clubs have made recently.
We are never (under the current regime) going to spend £100M on one player.
We have in Levy , someone who just loves to put his fingers in every pie and try to get a "bargain".
This could actually work in our favour , to an extent, insomuch that if we had a decent scouting network , not just looking at the big clubs big signings (ie being lazy) that went searching for the next deli, sherringham, kane etc from the lower leagues and/or properly developing our academy players, we wouldn't need to pay £100M, we would actually be able to charge that to other clubs.
We have managed to do it in the past in a limited way, but we should be able to do more of this type of business.
I'm not advocating that we are a selling club, but if every couple of years we can bang out a £100M player to someone else , while having a perfectly adequate replacement waiting in the wings , wouldnt it be soooo much better?
