Why are you using a 1 year sample when Bayern has 11 straight bundesliga titles and 5 different EPL teams have won the title over that time.

France is 9 of 11 in with 3 winners.

City need about 5 more titles before we start getting to the level of those 2 leagues.
The city team currently dominating the PL is also the best team in Europe by some margin. It was a fluke they lose those two CLs to Chavs and Real.

Even then Liverpool and woolwich (🤮)gave them a real challenge. Bayern won their league by default, and it wasn't even the first time time in the last 5/6 years.

As we saw with the Kane saga, the PL is competitive enough that teams in 4-6th spots have the financial muscle to resist the oil clubs even in a down year. Everyone in these other leagues always cave to the big 1/2.

Bayern didn't so much win the league this year as much as Dortmund lost it.

The more analytically robust way to do this (even accepting your fun-with-selected-endpoints 5 year timeframe) would be the average gap to the rest of the field per season for the "dominant" team:

PSG in Ligue 1: 8.6 points per season
Bayern in Bundesliga: 7.2 points per season
City in PL: 0.2 points per season.
I don’t think the fact Liverpool won 4 seasons ago by 18 points over City, who themselves had 15 points over 3rd place does anything to alter the fact the Premier League is incredibly uncompetitive. First place Liverpool were 33 points ahead of 3rd place. That’s never happened in ligue un. Clearly one extraordinarily uncompetitive season is distorting the statistic.

City’s dominance is now absolute in a similar way to Bayern and PSG - both clubs that have been in relative turmoil lately. No amount of hand waving really changes that fact.

then presumably that’s also true of Lens and Dortmund, two clubs from industrial towns without any oil or glamour.

Oh, so we have to disregard the numbers now, I see.

You know as well as I do that the Liverpool season is an anomaly. And an anomaly which was a historically uncompetitive league campaign. Has there ever been a less competitive title race in a top 5 league?

Perhaps… not many.

I’m not really arguing that the premier league is less competitive than the bundesliga or ligue un. Just that there’s a tendency towards blithe myopia when it comes to the PL and an exagération of the relative competitiveness.

Uhhhh yeah it does. The league came down to the final day on multiple occasions and they lost it one season, we've had a good handful of decent title races recently.

City (generally) have at least one club challenging them properly till the final stretch. Even when they're really good. That only happens to PSG or Bayern when they're having a shit year. The Prem has a number of clubs with the resources capable of challenging City.

A league coming down to the last day? Like both ligue un and the bundesliga this season?

Both the PL and Ligue Un have been won 4 times by one club and once by another in the past five years. Both leagues have had the league one by a single point twice in the past five years.

Of course the general standard in the PL is higher but the end results are not as different as you like to pretend.

Came down to the final day in Germany because Bayern were bad. Liverpool on the other hand were one of Europe's best for years and got 90+ seasons 3 times. Their battles with City for the league were brilliant & competitive slug matches between the elite. Not PSG or Bayern slipping up to crap Lens or Dortmund teams because they got complacent.

City are currently great (the world's best) but there's a handful of PL teams with the resources to challenge. Not true in Ligue 1 (a Lille or Lens might fluke it but they'll be nowhere the next season) or the Bundesliga.

Neither the Bundesliga or Ligue 1 have had ongoing title fights between juggernauts over 3-4 seasons like we had with Liverpool vs City. Nothing that is even close.

We reportedly paid something like 15-20mil for Spence, right? 11mil for Jack Clarke…

I think it’s worth it to take a punt on young homegrown talent like that every summer or two. You don’t unearth players like Dele or Grealish without taking that leap.

Chuck a 20mil bid in, surely?
Dele, Grealish, Walker, Rose, Lennon, Hudd, Davies, Bale etc as well Defoe, Parker and others from relegated sides

Got a good feeling we will hear something significant today. Feel like it needs wrapping up by tomorrow if we are to fly anyone out late for the tour. I reckon VDV flies to London today.
Could be blind optimism mind.
