Do you know what Eric Cantona said to Deschamp's face when he dared to criticize him for losing possession?

Eric Cantona replied to him '' you're just a fucking water carrier and that's what you will always be, your job is to give me the ball and I will do whatever the fuck I want with it''.

I'll say it again, everyone that has played football knows this, best players never respect an inferior player as their captain.

This is like forcing alphas to accept beta as their leader, it's simply against the laws of the nature.
Steve Perryman was a great captain but had much better players in that side, notably Hoddle, Ardiles, Archibald and probably a couple of others. Steve Bruce in the early to mid 90s Utd team? Tony Adams in that early Wenger Woolwich team?

We are not so much on a decline because we have shit players (aside from the defensive holes), but because of the shit system our previous managers played. I think Ange can get a tune of this group and finish top 6. We then build from there. My opinion, of course.
Yeah poss/prob. I’m talking a five year decline from CL so top 6 doesn’t revise that decline

Yes they do. Absolute rubbish. But Cantona wasn’t lying that deschamps was to give him the ball but deschamps was a leader. So Steve Bruce was better than Cantona? Was Puyol better than Messi? Was perryman better than hoddle? I could go on all day but players that are captains don’t need to be the best. They need to lead, manage the dressing room and be someone to look up to(especially young players) and lead by example.
Cantona was an arrogant genius but a guy who wasn’t a captain.
Kane isn’t your vocal captain but does all those things I’ve mentioned.
Stop making shit up because it makes you sound like a bitter clueless idiot which I’m sure you’re not.

The beta captained his country to the World Cup and Euros. Even the fact you use that terminology shows that you’re a child intellectually.
Zidane, Desaily, Thuram and Henry, won France WC and EC. That was their golden generation. They would still win the WC even if that donkey Guivarch was wearing the armband.

Captains who are not among the best players in the team are only tolerated in periods of success, it gets ugly as soon as things go south

It's astonishing how many people are living in the past with regard to captains, harking back to the days of Bryan Robson, John Terry and the like.

It hasn't been like that for years now, the captain is in many ways a symbolic role, with the focus much more off the field and the respect they have of their team-mates and how they liaise with the manager and even the chairman.

I've lost count of the number of times I've cited an interview with Xavi ten or more years ago, where he explained that the traditional captain's role on the pitch was very much a movable feast, anyone who felt the spirit move them could assume the role, one person might be more vocal with attackers, another with defenders, one earlier in the game, one later, but it would almost always move through the team depending on the moment.

So he might wear the armband but there were times where he was focusing more on his own game, maybe after making a mistake, and Pujol or Piqué would take up the mantle.

And so on and so on. He was adamant that the armband didn't make the slightest difference.

Would you rate Gundogan as Man City's best player? He wasn't even their best CM yet the players voted him as captain and I can guarantee you that it had nothing to do with whether they thought he was their best player.

'Water carriers' are never inferior, they are crucial to a team's success and the best players know that.
