It's astonishing how many people are living in the past with regard to captains, harking back to the days of Bryan Robson, John Terry and the like.

It hasn't been like that for years now, the captain is in many ways a symbolic role, with the focus much more off the field and the respect they have of their team-mates and how they liaise with the manager and even the chairman.

I've lost count of the number of times I've cited an interview with Xavi ten or more years ago, where he explained that the traditional captain's role on the pitch was very much a movable feast, anyone who felt the spirit move them could assume the role, one person might be more vocal with attackers, another with defenders, one earlier in the game, one later, but it would almost always move through the team depending on the moment.

So he might wear the armband but there were times where he was focusing more on his own game, maybe after making a mistake, and Pujol or Piqué would take up the mantle.

And so on and so on. He was adamant that the armband didn't make the slightest difference.
In international football in a lot of countries the captain is the one with most caps but in England we put more weight in the role. I assumed this was similar for club footbal that it's more important in the UK than elsewhere

Know it’s only 1 preseason match but it has to be telling that Ange put Skipp in the 8 and PEH (most heavily linked player to leave) as the backup 6.

So many moving parts in terms of the composition of the MF dept of our squad......

You could be right of course; but it's just my view on the players rather than a prediction.

I would argue that from an ENIC perspective (and from my perspective, for that matter) the right moment to go all in will be at the end of Ange's first season, if we have made progress on the field. Apart from a CB, which is obvious we need, we need to wait and see where the team is at the end of the season. A good season with European football secured again will also allow us to attract more of the players we would want.
The right moment is now, he has been entrusted to do a job and ENIC need to help him as much as possible before the season kicks off.

Do you know what Eric Cantona said to Deschamp's face when he dared to criticize him for losing possession?

Eric Cantona replied to him '' you're just a fucking water carrier and that's what you will always be, your job is to give me the ball and I will do whatever the fuck I want with it''.

I'll say it again, everyone that has played football knows this, best players never respect an inferior player as their captain.

This is like forcing alphas to accept beta as their leader, it's simply against the laws of the nature.

Also - Woolwich players voted for Xhaka to be their captain under Emery -

You're talking nonsense.

You can say it again as much as you like, and I'll also for the sake of repetition say again that you are talking a wonderfully insistent brand of nonsense. I admire you for speaking on behalf of everyone that has ever played football because that's a gift in itself, as is reimagining the Cantona quote for your own end. You might do well to cherry pick the quotes that run counter to your argument but I doubt that will happen.

Surely you can extend such logic through all facets of the game? Which is why Mourinho, Klopp et al have been such a success, because of their glittering football careers, otherwise how else would elite players accept them as their manager? It would be against the laws of nature

Don’t see any way we could get Douglas Luiz out of Villa as he signed a new contract last year. Would be a very good 6 rotation option with Biss, though.
Villa finished above us, I don't see why he would take a step down or at best a sideways step.
Douglas Luiz, Conor Callagher, who is coming up with these suggestions? They seem totally unrealistic and overpriced.

Steve Perryman was a great captain but had much better players in that side, notably Hoddle, Ardiles, Archibald and probably a couple of others. Steve Bruce in the early to mid 90s Utd team? Tony Adams in that early Wenger Woolwich team?

Yes they do. Absolute rubbish. But Cantona wasn’t lying that deschamps was to give him the ball but deschamps was a leader. So Steve Bruce was better than Cantona? Was Puyol better than Messi? Was perryman better than hoddle? I could go on all day but players that are captains don’t need to be the best. They need to lead, manage the dressing room and be someone to look up to(especially young players) and lead by example.
Cantona was an arrogant genius but a guy who wasn’t a captain.
Kane isn’t your vocal captain but does all those things I’ve mentioned.
Stop making shit up because it makes you sound like a bitter clueless idiot which I’m sure you’re not.
Things were different back then, water carriers were natural captains.

Of course. This is a total philosophy change.

Every player is being told to do something they’ve never done in their position, at least during their time at Spurs.

So we’re only guessing which player could fit based on their skill set.

I'm pretty sure it was Aubameyang, he was one the best prem STs during that time.

Cant link as Woolwich gets changed to Woolwich in the link but you can look it up but this is fact.

"Unai Emery has named Granit Xhaka Woolwich's permanent captain after the Swiss international won a players' vote for their preferred skipper.

Xhaka replaces Laurent Koscielny after leading the team in six of their eight games this season. Emery consulted with his players before informing the squad this morning ahead of Monday's game at Manchester United, live on Sky Sports."

Managers like Mourinho and Klopp have to work their way up to a a level where they can command respect in a dressing room full world class players, Managers like Zidane don't have to.
