Why gamble on a wide forward instead of a CF I think is the question?

You can name a striker you want us to sign worth 30m or so?

You were naming 80m strikers earlier. When we have one worth 60m

Why Doku over Toney for example (outside of the ban)?

Because Ivan Toney is 28 this year and would have likely been more suited for Antonio Conte.

You need to stop referencing the “6th highest scorer in our history” too, when 95% of those goals were scored playing a position you suggest moving him from.

Do you think he's less likely to score playing central?

Look I’m not against giving Richy a run and as I said I can see some logic in playing Son through the middle, what I find incredibly naive about your analysis is that you seem to think Son can play effectively as a CF for a whole season for this team, when his back to goal and hold up play is horrific.

We're not aiming to play back to goal, hold up football though. We're playing on the last line of defence, play between the lines, split defence type football...

We know we’re going to play better football and have the ball more, but there are always times when you need an outlet. It doesn’t mean we need a lump, it means we need more than Son offers in that area.

It’s a huge risk.

Richarlison and Son are different enough.

Ange football is about variety. He can play direct, but he can also play early and deep or use aggressive third man runs. We can be patient, but we could also manipulate the opposition. That's the outlet.

I haven’t named one striker other than Toney so a case of mistaken identity I’m afraid.

Not surprising though, when the crux of your argument is that Son scored goals from out wide, so there’s no reason he can’t play CF, it really negates any point you’ve made or any understanding of the nuances of playing CF.

To go back to where we began discussing this, you believe Son is the obvious choice for number 9 if Kane leaves.

I can see merit to playing him through the middle but do not believe it’s an ideal situation and we should monitor the wider market if we think that suitable CFs are available.

It's not a flawed question at all.

We have a 60m striker who's never had a run of games in that position and the clubs sixth top goalscorer of all time capable of playing the position needed in this system. It's not feasible to go and spend our sum on a striker.

If we sold Kane. I'd be fucking furious if we didn't use that money to strengthen the overall squad and instead spunk it on one player.

We can barely afford two centre backs as it is (or atleast unwilling to do so). So selling Kane isn't going to allow us to go and sign a Martinez in the first place.

We'd be best off going out and gambling on Doku and letting him and Solomon develop on that wing.
Again, I reiterate:

It was dumb having 1 CF when it was Kane, ignorant when that player is Richie.

Not saying we have to go spend £80M on a CF.

Not saying Richarlison doesn't get a run of games at CF - simply that he doesn't have to play 45ish games next season.

I find it really stupid to answer the need for depth at CF by moving a player who won the golden boot 14 months ago at LW away from LW.

Strengthen the weakness, don't create a 2nd weakness. Sign another striker to play up front, let Son do what he's shown he can do great in the past.

Lol - let's turn the 2021/22 golden boot winning LW into a backup CF so that Manor and Perisic can play!

:goonermong:

WTF....
No one’s saying turn him into a backup CF so that Solomon can play.

You play Richie and Son and then, if necessary, switch Son inside for the few games where it might be needed.

You’ve mentioned Vlahovic and Martinez. Firstly, neither are coming to us. Secondly, they would be 70 million plus. Also, Martinez is shit.

It’s just a case of priorities. I’d rather see us go balls deep on 2 CBs than chuck money at a poison chalice. Tell Richie and Son that it’s their turn to carry the team. See where we are in 12 months.

For the record, I do not expect Ange to do any better than 8th. I’m not labouring under the impression that we’re suddenly going to explode into prime Barca. This is the first year of a painful rebuild.

Maybe they’re thinking it could work as follows:

LW - Manor/Perisic
ST - Richi/Sonny
RW - Deki/Porro (with Spence taking the RB slot alongside Emerson)
That's poor tbh.

We absolutely need to get another top forward in if Kane goes.

We have so far brought in 3 players for a combined 52m. We should easily have another 80m available to spend on the CBs WITHOUT the Kane money. That should all go towards a shiny new forward.

He wasn’t playing as a LW when he won the golden boot though, he was playing off Kane, and becoming the striker when Kane dropped deep. He hasn’t really been a winger for years.
He definitely wasn’t playing as a lone CF though, that’s for sure.

Look Son has a lot of admirable qualities for a CF, his off-ball running is great and he’s normally an excellent finisher.

But his play with back to goal is awful, his first touch can be shaky and his link up play isn’t great.

I know Ange is using CFs differently to how we have seen Spurs over recent years, I get that. But there are always going to be times when you need those qualities from your no.9.

You can see that with Haaland at City, Jesus at Woolwich and Firmino in the prime Liverpool side. You’re never going to escape the need to have a CF to bounce off, hit or link up play.

We have a striker we paid £60m for. City paid less money for Haaland. Is Richarlison worth more than Haaland?

I think the goals will come from Richarlison if he gets a proper run in the team but there is no getting away from the fact that we paid over the odds for him. He's a player who might do all right for us for a while in the tradition of Chris Armstrong and Darren Bent. All we can do is get behind him and hope for the best.
