And look, that’s not a death sentence. Dele recently had one of the most productive runs in our club’s entire history as a similar profile, an advanced midfielder who is all action and isn’t much of a passer. But you have a much, much lower margin for success that way. You’d better have outlier physical ability or some sort of elite dribbling/goal-scoring threat. Once Dele’s pace and ability to be everywhere went, soon did his finishing and G/A totals, soon did his overall threat as a player and general value proposition to a top side, and sadly soon did his career.

You need auxiliary game-controlling skills to fall back on, and those are exactly why Bentancur has become our best midfielder.

And look I don’t watch Celta week in week out.

But I do know trends. And one trend is that when a player is touted to all the top clubs and very well known in transfer rumor circles, but doesn’t have any concrete offers, that’s a red flag. Teams have done their due diligence, there wouldn’t be so many links if they hadn’t. And they all decided to shop elsewhere. That says something. No one has actually made a real offer to Celta yet.

It's also not a player we need, especially if we sell Hojbjerg.

Side note: Zaha went to Turkey for £3m sign-on and £80k a week (approx. £125k a week). Apparently despite being offered £200k a week by Palace. I don't know what's going on in that lads head, but I suspect 'fuck all'.

Maybe he is fed up of being the main man in a relegation battle every season.

Don't think this "update" has been posted before..
Alan Nixon revealed Spurs' struggles to get a deal over the line earlier this week and nothing seems to have changed since then.

The same journalist believes the player had undergone a medical ahead of a potential switch to the North London outfit - but the two sides remain apart in their valuations.

Interested teams previously thought they could get him for around £2m plus extras.

But Rovers are demanding more than £5m for his signature, with the Lancashire outfit keen to secure as much money for the player as possible.

Tomasson pretty much confirmed what Nixon had reported earlier this week when he was asked about Phillips' situation.

He said: "I gave him his first start last season and we were extremely pleased with his development.

"He is a player who is going to have a great future for English football. At the moment, there is not an agreement with the clubs.

"There are negotiations in that way and we will see what happens."

pathetic.

Here’s my only thing on Veiga. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a talent. Physically gifted, has an innate sense to arrive on crosses, tidy finisher, quick feet, energetic, all-around.

However - he doesn’t do any work in the first phase of buildup and is not a deep midfielder whatsoever, an 8 who needs to be advanced and not particularly gifted with passing or vision. Yeah, that can still be a great profile, but something about him screams to me the same uneasy feeling I had about Jenas, Paulinho, Dele, more recently Matheus Nunes, where they have these gaudy G/A totals but don’t really impact games as much as you’d think.

My issue is what does he excel at? Our best midfielders have always been specialists. Eriksen, Dembele, Luka, Carrick, Ginola, VDV, Gazza, Hoddle, Mackey etc. you can point to all of them and say, he was very close to the best in the world at this specific part of the game, be it dribbling, close control, stamina, long range shots, vision, tackling, crossing, free kicks, etc. Each one of them had something truly special in them, they were all well-rounded too, but each of them had that piece of true clsss in their locker that made them unique to any other midfielder in the world.

Veiga I don’t think has that, or at least, I question what his stand-out skill is.

And here’s why I’m cautious. Hasn’t he been linked with all the top clubs? All of them? City, the Spanish giants, Woolwich, Bayern I believe, Liverpool, the hits keep on coming. Why hasn’t anyone pulled the trigger on him, the summer where he was supposedly the darling of half of Europe? That concerns me.

He’s probably better than Gallagher tbf. But I don’t feel he’s a star. Look below, those are shocking passing statistics!

He doesn't pass much, but that doesn't mean he has no vision, while being in the bottom 4 percent of passes attempted he's in the 70th percentile for expected assists, 62 percentile for key passes, and 72 percentile for through balls, so while he doesn't pass a lot, he tries a lot of dangerous balls when he does try to pass, which explains the low pass completion percentage.

That is true, sure. But it's not like we were that great defensively from about game 6 or 7. Conceding 2 goals a game is awful.
Not at all, we have a squad full of clowns for defense.
But for the other guy to say, word for wore that "conte makes players worse" is factually wrong.

We were worse before he came and worse after he left. While he was here we were a top 4 team, at one point stringing probably 20 games together like a team chasing the title.
I don't care if people didn't like the visuals of it, we were a better team with him than before or after he came.

If people don't like the style, that's fine, I get it and wasn't keen. But he knew where the weakness was in the squad and did what was needed to address it. It's a shame he never had some proper leader defenders. We may have seen something different from the rest.
