Diaby only had one year left on his contract though.

Tapsoba has 3 years remaining and they have no real reason to sell. They're hardly poor.

Diaby had two years left

Levy has managed to negotiate the transfers of Berbatov and Son out of Leverkusen, they weren't easy deals but they got done and there seems to be a good relationship between the two clubs.

True Bayer are not poor but they are used to selling players. They know when players want to leave it's best to let them go. Im just not sure if Tapsoba is the number one target for us.

The other thing is that is mad about not just paying the 45-50M for Tapsoba is that in the long run levy loses out anyway going for a number of ‘cheaper’ options just means you waste the money anyway just on more players

For eg Rodon, njie, nkoudou, Jannsen, Fabio, stambouli, chriches etc etc all cost money .

Yep. He’s made the same mistake probably 20 or 30 times. He never learns.

1. In isolation, yes. This CB search isn't in isolation, it's a string of reasons why it hasn't happened.

2. That is still my attitude, I just avoided that debate because it goes down the same alley every time.

3. It is fair to say that. That was my entire point.

Conte wanted Bastoni, I do wonder how things might have worked out of we had managed to get him. He also wanted Gvardiol. Maybe if we had bid 80-90m last summer we'd have got him because City were focused on Haaland. We can afford 80-90m on a Cb if we want to.We just don't want to do that.

Maybe we don't trust our scouting, maybe we lack conviction to signing the best players we possibly can.
Exactly, we don't want to do it, Woolwich have, villa have.
Levy always sees it as a victory, by lowering the price to almost insult levels.
Except of course, when we are selling, then it's a different story.

Chelsea also wanted him last summer and they couldn't sign him. Don't think 80-90m would've been enough. I'm also not sure paying so much for him would've been a smart move.

As to how things might've worked out: pretty much the same. Bastoni is not a defensive rock. He's better defensively than Lenglet, but he's no VVD, and our issues defensively were literally all over the pitch, people just focus on the LCB position cause there's an obvious improvement yet to be made there.

Why are people here trying to convince people we should buy fucking Maguire?
Sticky thinking, like some every window until now long for getting the crew back together (Eriksen, Dele…).

Being in the now, is best, but hard for many who only have time for Spurs n Match of the day (to realise the gulf in current form and trajectory between Maguire Vs Tapsoba, so I get it, but sheesh).

So, what are you saying? we don't need to sign a top class CB or even 2?

Diaby had two years left

Apologies, didn't know he signed an extension on his original 5 year deal.

Exactly. So this is more likely that Leverkusen are overpricing a centre back. If our analytics or whatever we use tell us that van de Ven is not only better value for money, but could exceed Tapsoba at the same age, I'll go with it.

Maybe Tapsoba is hesitant then?

What bingo numbers win the "we tried" excuse that gets put out for not signing Tapsoba?

Last summer with Bastoni we went with "He's a lifelong Inter fan".

Not sure we can say that with Tapsoba.

Maybe it will be Leverkeusen's fault for asking too much money?

If he's impressed by him at LB I assume Reguilon and Sess will be moved on.

I think they both need to go, but I don't think there's any chance that Sess goes at this point. If for nothing else that clubs don't tend to tear up contracts on players who just underwent a surgery, and no club is going to want to buy him right now. I think we're stuck with him at least this window.

3 Things we need to improve from the first game:

1. our defense need to improve.

2. the speed of play need to improve we need to play faster.

3. we need to be sharper in front of goal and take our chances.

Yes, I mean of course we can afford to spend 80-90m on a CB, but we all know, especially Levy, if that were to happen then that means a new standard of expectation has been created and we would expect us to be making an 80-90m signing almost every other season. We're very comfortable from a financial standpoint as we are, business is going well, why rock the boat and take risks to start challenging for the title?!? Only mindless hooligans do such a thing! :levystare:
