Brennan Johnson for £50m is crazy. That's a huge gamble on a very raw player who just had a poor season.

Would we not be better making a push for Madueke, he is both home grown and club trained. Offers some pace out wide. He doesn't seem to be starting for Chelsea. Or even Marcus Edwards who looked quality against us fairly recently.

Or you can look at it like they have multiple reliable scorers. Again I hate to say it but due to their system, they can lose Jesus for Nketia and still be a constant threat. They were also an exception last season as they were the only team to remotely push City and all but guaranteed themselves a CL spot by playing the way they did.

Brighton also had goals coming from everywhere.

In fact, look at City the year before Haaland and they had so many goal scorers - KDB was their highest with 15.

The year before - Gundoan was the top scorer with 13.

Last year

We relied heavily on one player - Kane
Lpool relied heavily on one player - Salah
United related heavily on one player - Rashford

Id rather be playing and have a system that works like (vomit in my mouth) Woolwich or Brighton, than a system that relies on us having one stand out scorer as a) its not a sustainable way to play and 2) there arent that many Kane/Haalands out there.

I do think they would spread the goals less if they had a more gifted forward. I don't dispute that spreading them around is a good thing.
What would be an interesting stat is league position vs top goal scorer. IE, do teams that usually finish higher up usually have a standout top scorer / golden boot winner.
City have had Aguerro and now Haaland. Liverpool have had Salah. We've had Kane. Chelsea have had Drogba and Costa.
Be interesting with Arse this season if they can continue to spread the goals and get the results.

Much? How so ?

Always thought Barnes was pretty meh but would surprisingly turn up on the score sheet. Obviously not a bad thing.

Barnes is also older with more PL experience and just hit double digit goals for the first time in his career.

Barnes may be better now. Will be interesting to see what Johnson’s career looks like at 25. You pay a premium on HG potential these days
You answered it for me. He scores, creates chances,is older with lots more big game experience is better now.
Johnson might progress and be top player but from the games I’ve seen him I’ve not been blown away or think he’s going to be a right good player. I have always thought Barnes was the type of player that was quite underrated and is always a goal threat.

Barnes is better than Johnson but he's a LW, and we're fully stocked on that position.
