But he wasnt the James Maddison he is today.

Lets look at it like this

back in 2016 who were the best MF in the prem?

Hazard? David Silva? Willian? Mata? Fabregas?

Pretty sure we categorically could not sign some of those players

You're arguing something I'm not arguing as well.

Maddison has NEVER had the profile of a Hazard or a Silva, until maybe now .. and even then, no he still hasn't.

Even if Maddison back then was the player he is today, we could have signed him. He'd just been relegated and only one other side were in for him. His underlying numbers were fantastic but for various reasons his profile didn't match that - he was barely getting international caps.

Adjusting for inflation, his fee makes the numbers for Gallagher and Johnson look like bargains.
Both HG, Gallagher has around 100 PL games, Johnson has 40 from around 40 available to him. Both have decent stats and pass the eye test. Both know the league, know Tottenham and seem to be wanted by the coach.

Yet people are losing their fucking minds over their fees. I bet those same fans were collectively pissing themselves because we signed some prick who PSG bought, loaned out twice then sold, then the club that bought him sold him in a matter of weeks. We were utterly conned.
I'd be quite happy with them both (runs for cover). Both young and busy, can chip in with goals which we will clearly need. Think they'd suit what we're trying to do under Ange. Sorts out the homegrown issue we've been struggling with for years as well. Yes overpriced but thats the game now. Just been fed up the last 4 years of watching tired players labouring around the pitch and if Hojbjerg leaves its a win win.

You're arguing something that I'm not arguing. I'm not even saying we SHOULD have signed Maddison nor blaming the club for not doing so.

The whole argument is "did we have the pull to ATTRACT Maddison pre stadium" and my answer to that is yes, yes we did.

I have no clue if Poch liked or didn't like him, nor do I really care.

Lol you're having a bit of a mare here mate.

Literally no one is saying we couldn't attract a young James Maddison, who had yet to post the stats he has recently.

We signed Modric, Bale, Eriksen, Lamela, Walker - all players with huge potential at the time.

The discussion we were having was essentially if we could have signed one of the top 5 midfielders in the premier league at the old WHL.

maybe but not exactly an eze in terms of ability

i would rather go for eze personally as i think more teams will come in for him next year

fills our hg quota too and is exciting to watch
Totally, Eze is definitely the better player, though a different position.

Eze and Tosin is a grand slam.

Johnson and Gallagher don't even play the right positions, we're still short.

And it's the same-ish price? Very confusing.

the other signings ange was happy to leave it up to the new data team we have assembled which is why you are seeing us linked with so many players that Brighton and brentford are because that’s how they work too and why I believe Johnson will happen as well

What use is this new data-led system if it just leads us to whatever Brighton & Brentford are doing?

s reactions mr GIF

if gallagher is 50 you can see why palace want 70 for eze

both ridiculous prices tho but you will get more bang for your buck with eze

gallagher you kinda know jack of all trades master of none, can run for days tho

Re Gallagher there were two players ange wanted when he joined one was maddison the other was Gallagher , it says a lot about our board and our ambition that we are waiting on the sale of holberg to get one of the managers main targets in

They've got a real hard on for getting home grown options in during the death throes of this window right now. "Future proofing now due to rising prices" is the key phrase I keep hearing, and very much expect that's the way we are gravitating. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see 2 HG options come through the door in what ever guise that takes.
__________

please be excited, and donate to my bank account
I’ve got £1000 if you give me your name, address, bank, sort, account and that three digit code on the back (just for extra security, all legit).

Lol you're having a bit of a mare here mate.

I've posted about five times what I actually mean and you still haven't understood it, so the only one having a mare is you. Jesus christ.

I'm saying we could sign the Maddison of now back then. I dunno how to put that any clearer. Maybe if I put in a different language.

Nous pouvions signer le Maddison d’aujourd’hui même à l’époque.

Does that help? Do I need a neon sign saying

"EVEN.THEN.MADDISON.OF.NOW.WOULD.HAVE.SIGNED"

I love coming on here to get my fix of idiocy and laughs.

People moaning about the lack of signings, and then the same people moaning about the signings we make/linked to.

People saying we should back the manager and make the signings he wants, the same people moan about the signings Ange wants and that they're a lack of ambition.

So many live in hindsight.

I get it, I don't think we could have and don't see any similar signings we made from back then to back up what you are saying.

You don't think pre new stadium we signed any players on a similar level of profile to a relegated midfielder with 3 England caps who only Newcastle wanted and who was priced very reasonably? When we were finishing 2nd in the league and beating Real Madrid 3-0 in the CL?

Okay I guess. Opinions are like...

I believe Johnson will be a great fit for our style of play and a nice upgrade on Kulu
For me, that bold is a low, low bar. that said, we've been linked with Johnson for some time (since Forrest's promotion year) but when I've watched all I've seen is a runner low on technical ability. Open to modify/evolve my perspective based on new evidence. His pace will improve matters over Kulu's contributions. Good to see you're comfortable with this move...I shall relax a bit then.

I don't even think they're over priced when you compare them to what Gordon, Hall, Palmer etc are moving for. Even further back, Tomori cost Milan £25m for a fairly average defender who gets nowhere near international football.

If we're on about selling PEH for £30m then why is £50m unreasonable for a HG player in the same position who us much younger and has longer on his contract. AND from a rival.

I just can't get my head around the hypocrisy. £60m for Richarlison was a rip off. That was about £50m too much.
