Context is, we have sold our best player, and invested like we were doing so from a position of power.

Others have us spending £65m (see post above by Sir Archibald Crooks Sir Archibald Crooks ).

So, if we had £50m carry over from the £150m, we have actually invested £15m!

Just think the positive start shouldn’t cloud the fact Levy left Ange with no new CB, which he stated he wanted in the press, after investing a whopping £15m (loan fees, might well make £5m of that, so probably closer to £10m true Net Spend).

If we go after Toney for £70m or such, in January, then this is understandable, however if this is “the budget”, then they have no place at our club after finishing 8th and investing a whopping £10-15m.

Bournemouth had a higher 'net spend' than Liverpool this Summer, Forest had a higher net spend than City last Summer, it doesn't mean a thing in context, each club is unique to themselves and they will see fit.

If we did the stupid thing and paid double of what we paid for our players, Maddison £80m Johnson £90m etc...would you be more happier, would it show more ambition? If we sold Kane for £50m would it show that we are a serious club because we 'spent' more?

The only thing you should be looking at is if the manager is happy, it seems like he is. By all accounts he was the one driving the transfer window, he said himself that he has the final say on incomings hence why we were in no desperate need of a DOF, the guy knows and understands the market.

And you said yourself just because the money isn't spent in one window doesn't mean it won't be spent in future windows, stupid clubs blow their budget and regret it later on because of desperation, since we are being data led and entirely sensible in our transfers now, we are not trying to be a stupid club anymore.

Ironically; of all the numbers you've tossed about the only one that truly fits the description of "investment" is the 50m you're keen to discount....

People have been banging on about ENIC not investing their own dosh; yet when they do so it doesn't count"???? Madness.....



One thing this window has taught me (which I long suspected anyway) is that the so-called "spreadsheet fans" aren't who they're purported to be.... Quite the opposite.

Me; I'm just keen to enjoy the new players and excited to see where they can take us... Yesterday's performance and we haven't even seen Johnson, Veliz and Phillips yet? ......Bring it on!!!!!

Yeah he won't be happy but he won't throw his toys out the pram, he will still make use of Sanchez and in the context of where we were in May to where we are now squad wise I feel that he will be happy with our overall business.

Also Dier won't play a minute this season.

If you pay the release clause you have to pay all the money up front. By doing a 6 month loan we defer the upfront payment and can make the fee subject to instalments. That’s my understanding of that situation.

so Porro was a purchase this summer.

We were locked into the deal, Postecoglou could have said no to Kulusevski, he couldnt to Porro therefore i dont think it should. But its ifs and buts, we should have had enough money for another good centre back who the manager wanted.

NET spend doesn't matter if you cover all the bases, i was ok with not paying £40m for Raya and signing Vicario, Maddison for £40m Bissouma for £25m and Udogie and Sarr prove it can be done without spending fortunes but you have to give the manager what he asks for (within reason) and they didnt.

I agree, I don't blame him really for not wanting to go there but I doubt Fulham would make a official bid (if that indeed was true) if he hadn't shown any interest.
However, Angelos did play him yesterday so it seem he's not too upset about it.

That's not how net spend works... Words have meanings. How does having 50m in the bank effect net spend.

It was a stock move, then did not put £1 of their own money into this.

The two aspects are not conjoined = I’m loving Ange and the uptick, however he has been overtly let down “I expect another CB”.

Some positive results does not discount their multi factorial failures since 2016.

Let’s fuck off the Net Spend debate and call it the Rebuild Investment debate.

And let’s say we all agree, we left things not done and the club has to have some powder left dry for January and go hard if there is an opportunity.

I don't think the process is a standardised nor linear thing......

Clubs will make it known that players are available, other times it's agents driving things..... Sometimes clubs will approach agents (seeking confirmation and a pre-contract agreement or terms); other times they approach the club and seek permission to talk to the players.

Just one example....

The PEH > Madrid story becomes public knowledge..... Fulham could have easily approached us saying "I see you're interested in selling PEH.... We're prepared to match your price" leaving us saying "sure; speak to the player; if they agree we've got a deal.".

So there is a case for treating him as an extra arrival in this window, straight into the first team and is giving us a real boost

A top signing - whether he should be counted last summer or this summer imo we are lucky to have him.

Most ignored him....we never shut about him. I've been raving about since I saw him live against Milan. Mrs perryman and few others suggested we bung them more money to get him early. In truth I'm glad we never let Conte get anywhere near him.

Bickering about the amount of "powder" left is essentially the same thing......... Bickering about how "hard" we can go is essentially bickering about the same thing...... How much is left in the pot right now...?

You can't answer that question any better than I can....... When I asked the question in June; barely anyone dared answer "how much is a fair budget for this summer?".


Let's simplify the matter even further (cos every one of us is fighting a losing battle trying to second-guess what our player budgets are from year to year and how they mesh with the actual cash flow/payments/amortisation etc).......

Accepted: We still have boxes to tick..... Every one of us will anticipate those boxes being ticked in the next window.... In turn new 'boxes' are likely to arise in the meantime and the never ending cycle will continue.

We can all - from our under-informed positions - bicker about unquantified degrees of ambition; but the argument will never be resolved even if we win the league (Liverpool & Leicester forums will be testament to that fact).


I just watched a 20+minute video of Lee Gunner melting about the Scum's squad being full of holes (purely for comedy value!); but from the outside one would think their window was about 'the final peices of the puzzle', but according to him (and he's not the only one) they have more problems than they did in June.
