Very difficult plucking a striker out the blue for a decent price now though. You can still do that with defenders and midfielders to a certain extent. Hojlund £70m having scored 10 goals in Serie A the season before, basically paying for potential. It looks a really slim list of potential targets if you want an out an out centre forward and if you want a good one you're looking at circa £70m.

That is our big challenge because we used the Kane money to rebuild elsewhere like VDV and Maddison but that Job isn’t done yet because we still need creative players and that’s before we even look at the fact that we haven’t signed a real top class goal scorer.

We need serious investment to challenge or we need to work miracles finding value on the market. Ange is a football coach not a magician

Johnson is going to have a spectacular season. Possible Player of the Year stuff.

I intend to die on this hill. Try and stop me.

Didn’t start playing till end of Jan. having been out for 8 months.
It's not the overall record for the season, g+a/min were very poor. The season prior to his big season, he was only about average. The fella had 1 big championship season, 1 big PL season, a big suspension for a stupid reason, and he's 28.

If he'd been scoring at a 100 min per goal clip consistently for a few seasons it would be one thing. But he hasn't, and it's just as likely he's a 1 season wonder who will never replicate that form again who will hang around here stinking up the joint into his 30s because we can't shift him

I don't have a problem with you saying he had a poor season last season but there are obvious mitigating circumstances because he hadn't trained for like 8 months or something like that, that's obviously going to affect rhythm and performances!

This is what I mean about people only really speaking about his deficiencies, yes he carries a risk factor but so does everyone else...every player on the transfer market has flaws, whether they're too young/inexperienced, whether they've never played in the Premier League, whether they've had 1 good season and nothing else to back it up with etc...
My point is that he's had a shit season, a suspension, 1 very good season in the PL, 1 very average season in the PL, 1 good season in the Championship against inferior competition, 1 good season in League One, and 1 average season in League One.

And he's 28, so if you sign him you're married to him for better or worse. If he's great, good. If he's a donkey, then you're in another Dier situation where you can't get rid of an expensive underperforming old player.

There's just better gambles to take than Toney.

Who are the better gambles?

Nice pun btw :p

Brennan Johnson scored or assisted 15 goals last season, a full 20% of our goals in one of the clubs most prolific seasons ever. A goal involvement every 139 minutes. At the age of 22.

Yet this thread is full of "supporters" who love to slag him off whilst drooling over a 28 year old that had 6 G+A in 1449 minutes last season, a goal involvements every 241 minutes.

Almost like it's never all about just g/a and that is hugely influenced by a shit load of context like staying fit, the team you play for, pure dumb luck...

Brennan Johnson's numbers make him look better than he was and Toney's make him look worse than he is, whereas his numbers the very season before probably made him look better than he is. Neither are bad or great footballers.

Is it wrong that I don’t know if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me?

Definitely against my guy. Definitely against.

Brennan is a handy little homegrown footballer who will put up some very reasonable numbers again but ultimately he has a very basic profile and will always be a support cast type and never the main course or even dessert.

He's ketchup.

Ah ok. Read your post a few times and couldn’t get it. Either shite writing, or I may have had a stroke. Loud and clear this time.

All the other names that have been touted. Gyokeres, Gimenez, Vlahovic, etc.

Giminez? :D

All the other names have never played Premier League football, all the other names have never played at a level as good as the Prem.

How many strikers have come into this league from weaker leagues and flopped, struggled or not hit the ground running from day 1

Nunez/Hoylund/Jackson/Gakpo all bought for relatively high fees in recent seasons and have all struggled to settle in.

I'm aware that there are exceptions to this rule like Isak and Haaland but then again Haaland is a complete outlier, guy's a freak of nature, Isak is a rare diamond.

I wouldn't say Toney is more than a risk than other players on that list at all, in fact what's the likelihood that Toney will regress, he has all the abilities to be a top striker in the right team, he can finish and create his own chances.

Like how many goals do you think Giminez is really scoring for that defensive Brentford team over the last few years? Do you genuinely see the likes of Gyokeres outscoring Toney if he played for Brentford over the last few years, come on be honest?
