I had a discussion with a mate a few months ago about Solanke. He really wants to sign him but I was worried that he would cost £60m+ and has only done it for one season (two if you include the championship). When you look at his attributes and all round play it’s clear why Chelsea and Liverpool had him around (he’s big, strong, presses well, decent first touch, fairly quick) but even now isn’t a great finisher. If Solanke is at the level he was last season now then it’s a brilliant signing, if it was an outlier then he’s grossly overpriced and not going to take us to where we need to be.

The longer the window goes on, the more I like the idea of bringing him in but this is more down to lowering my expectations than seeing something new in him. If we do bring him in it’s a big risk as he’s not proven quality, but could end up being a shrewd signing if he has levelled up.

You wouldn’t want the best finisher in the world?

We've hit peak transfer window madness.
We'd kill to have the finishing. As I said though, I'm not sure he can give us much else that we really need for this system out of possession.

If you want to physically understand what I mean, go and do x2 hill sprints, then without resting take the most powerful shot you can.

Then realize that these days Solanke hits that shot after the hill sprints much harder and more accurate than Kane does at 32. Which would inevitably lead to Kane just not doing the hill sprints.

tbh there aren't loads of CFs in the world that can do the hill sprints and still hit the shot with power and accuracy.

The point is, Kane doesn't fit any system. He's become a glorified tap in merchant. He's set himself up well by going to a one-team-league where there's a handful of very poor teams where he can bang in five a piece

Looked that way in the Euros.

He can do so much more than that but he seems to have developed this habit of protecting his body so much that he becomes a total luxury out of possession. That's why I'm saying I'm not sure I'd want him back. If we had a defensive counter attack manager then every day all day but for a front foot system.... no so much.
