3rd highest non-penalty goals in the league but apparently he's subpar?

He is 26 and his best season tally prior to last season was six goals. I can reel off a very long list of mediocre strikers who had a one off great goalscoring season, if you’d like.

FYI, I actually don’t think he’s subpar. But he definitely isn’t top tier and massively goes against the idea we’d rather wait to sign a ‘perfect’ player than overpay for a less than perfect one.

70 million for him is laughable. He was still behind xG last season, Bournemouth were great offensively. One good season shouldn’t make a player worth that fee.

A lot of copamine being dished out on here this morning.

Solanke and Lankshear as our only CFs this season. That's literally depth worthy of Bournemouth.

Remember when Ange said he wanted to win the league?

:angeshock:
Is Toney really much better though ? I know Solanke isn't some foregin name but he has proven he can cut it in the PL - if we sell Richie though then we need to buy another striker though but I think Richie , Solanke and Son and we have at least improved from last season!

The idea of Solanke is that he’s a rising tide who lifts all boats, as he presses like a man possessed and holds up the ball really well. One thing I’ve read from Bournemouth fans is he released the likes of Semenyo and Kluivert into space really well and was quite useful for knockdowns etc.

I hate the “defensive striker” nonsense but I think we could really use a presser like him up front, but that pales in comparison to how much having a striker who can hold up the ball would help our attack. The rosy case for Solanke is that Bournemouth being great offensively is due to his prowess as a complete #9 and his constant occupation of defenders and running.

He scored 29 goals in his best season, in the Championship sure but if we're adding context it's probably worth noting that he's been playing for Bournemouth.

Good, that means he wasn't just fluking, he was in the right place to get on the end of the chances Bournemouth created for him, and we'll create more.

*spends nearly 70 million British pounds on Dominic Solanke*
He has great stats and we have a very rigorous data analysis department now. We know that anyone we bring in will have very good underlying stats and that we are scouting to fit the system. Doesn’t mean there isn’t risk involved.

People seem to laud other clubs for identifying a gap and spending the money (« overpaying ») to fill that gap. Isn’t that exactly what we’re supposed to be doing here?

His playing for Bournemouth isn’t that relevant when he was behind on xG by 4 goals when he scored 6. He’s just not clinical.

Meh. He’s consistently behind it in his career because in front of goal he is a questionable striker. Last season was an exception to that rule.

We will? Not always how it works. They played very offensively and round him. We’ll see.

Noises coming out of club are that we are not looking to have subpar players anymore - it’s better to sign no one than someone who isn’t right for the project… otherwise you are left trying to sell mediocre players two years later with no PL buyers and everyone on the continent broke.

Let’s bring in the right players even if they take a bit longer to bring in.
Yep

Werner singing confirms this

Veliz is another Gil isn’t he?

We’ll have to bump both of them off to Spain permanently at the earliest opportunity

I’m a bit disappointed in our data analysts and scouts if they’ve scoured the market and the best they can come up with for nearly 70 million pounds is a player who has hit double figures in the premier league once.

I don’t know what he has great stats mean other than he had a good goalscoring season. The rest of his underlying numbers are not super impressive.

Again, I like him. I rated him last season and if he signs I won’t shit on it. But if Woolwich hijacked this and signed him next week the amount of backtracking some of you would do is monumental.

Lo Celso is not mediocre, he's injury prone. You'd think we'd want to avoid injury prone players, but apparently we're looking at Neto.
yep. spending big money on players now, they need to be robust and available. a lesson should of been learnt from the gio and ndombele signings.

if neto is for 25m then just like chiesa its a punt. but spending anything north of 35, there needs to be no doubt about health.

It concerns me we were actively looking for subpar players previously.
