The issue is we've never had someone who has been successful at club level (Hugo and Romero's WC exploits don't translate well).

Over the years no one has been able to say listen lads this is how we get over the line and win this cup/league etc. because they haven't fucking done it! So it just doesn't hold weight.

Kyle Walker wasn't a leader when he joined Man City but having been there and won the lot he now is a leader in that dressing room to the younger players.
Hugo was a world cup winner though , but i just don't think he made a good captain and should have certainly been demoted after the drink driving incident!

But an honest question, how many of you would want another Llorente or Edgar Davids kind of signing if that means we add experience but an aging player? Because there will always be some who will grab the opportunity in slamming Levy for showing no ambition but shopping from sale or preloved carts.
Perisic would have worked out quite well if it wasn't for the Injury!
I think this is a reason why we should go big in the cups, even if its the League cup it gets the players used to winning something together - this is where I think Poch made a huge mistake in discounting the cups !

Poch reached a league cup final, 2 fa cup semi finals, another league cup semi and finally the CL final.

He made some bizzare selections but he never actively binned off the cups

This says enough for me ......... compare it to Ange who says he wants to win everything, its about building a winning mentality!

We always go big or whatever term people give to the cups. We are just poor when it comes to making progress

The notion we just throw in the towel or take the cups less seriously is more rubbish.

Without a maverick player and when you can and do concede against anyone, you are just prone to losing.

I am past the point of believing in a remedy.

didn't realise he said that, a very strange thing for a manager to say, especially a former player.

We have also been completely handicapped over the last 7 years by our inability to bin off terrible squad players like PEH, Royal, Winks, Skipp, Sanchez, Dier Forster etc that repeatedly cost us cup exits

Remind me of the last time Dortmund won the league?
I don't disagree in that we shouldn't be afraid to sell players , however financially we are now nothing like Dortmund - we are one of the heavy weights - Dortmund have to adopt that model as they can't compete financially with the likes of Munich, I don't want us to become a team that signs young exciting players and then sells them to a bigger club in there prime - granted there will be some players who want to go but that should be the exception, not the model of operation!
I like this post. There's been a few people on here saying we should follow the Dortmund model.
This post describes, far more eloquently than me why we shouldn't.
The Dortmund model is essentially an academy breeding young players to go on to help other teams achieve success.
They're basically a bunch of losers who could and should achieve much more considering their fan base and catchment area.
No thanks.

One of the biggest myths out there that Poch “discounted the cups” mate. He didn’t.

He got us further in cup competitions than any manager has in the last 20 odd years…
