Tottenham came into this game off an impressive result against a less than impressive team in Georgia. Andros Townsend after a strong performance in the Europa League tie and thanks to injury to Aaron Lennon, was given his first start at White Hart Lane against Swansea. The starting line up consisted of Etienne Capoue (who also filled in for Jan Vertonghen when the Belgian went on his forward runs), Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in midfield. These three physical players pressed […]

"Quite contrary to Lennon who typically keeps wide and crosses, often to poor standards, Townsend offered more variety in his attacking play"

Couldn't agree with that statement much less. True of Lennon about 2 years ago, but certainly not in more recent years. Lennon very much seems to be the victim of new toy syndrome at the moment. He just keeps doing what he's doing consistently, but its not as new and exciting as a Chadli or Townsend so gets labelled as poor.

Chadli and Townsend are more exciting, sure, but there is so much more to their game then Lennon's. Lennon rarely does anything except run to the byline and cross. His crosses are usually pretty poor as well. Townsend and Chadli offer a goal threat, while Chadli offers better passing as well. The fact that Lennon has been at the club for so long clouds everybody's judgement of him as a player. If he had only been at the club for a couple of years, people would see that he is nothing but pace and is pretty poor most of the time. Lennon hasn't progressed while the team as a whole has and thats why he's being left behind.

We obviously think differently on this matter. I would have agreed with you two years ago, its simply not the case now

Well then what do you think he does well? I'm genuinely curious because I don't think he does anything well except beating a full back to get a cross away.

He's been cutting inside alot more often finding a decent pass or taking a shot on. In addition I don't agree his crossing is bad. More often he takes it further inside and looks for a flat ball as opposed to lofting it in the box. He used to be a corner obtaining machine when he went straight at the end of the pitch and pinged it off the nearest defender.

Not every ball is going to come off, you do need to take a gamble in that position sometimes to get anywhere. Otherwise it ends up being like the end of last season where it gets pinged around the area aimlessly and everyone is flat footed with no space to use
