Thought it might be easier to understand by putting the players into likely playing positions.

Players in red were in the last squad but NOT in this latest squad (several through injury). Players in blue are in this squad but not in the last squad.

Overall lots of changers which are positive.

No real changes in the defensive positions or strikers. Lots of changes in midfield, partly through injuries to Dele and Lingard and the non playing Loftus-Cheek (replaced by Chelsea team mate Ross Barkey who plays club football probably at Loftus-Chek's expense) , but certainly some were due. Perhaps a surprise to see Mount and Chalobah but not his Watford team mate Will Hughes (arguably replaced by Mount at Derby) or Lewis Cook.

Maddison and Sancho are shoe ins based upon form, even if not experience. When Dele and Lingard are fit could be interesting to see who is picked.

The surprise to me is the lack of change at striker - if Harry doesn't play Welbeck is not the solution and hasn't been for years and Rashford is certainly not yet but at age 20 might be in the future. The one real surprise in the squad for me is Welbeck remaining in the squad and no new faces, which should have been Sturridge and/or Wilson.

Has Chalobah even been playing for Watford? I’d have liked to see Hughes in that squad. And possibly Cook.

I understand Chalobah has played about 5 minutes PL football for Watford this season and 2 league matches. Hence my surprise at his inclusion, but clearly Southgate (or someone else at FA) rates him for some reason.

He may come good, but atm I'd suggest his call up has come too early.

Agree with Hughes and Cook - far more experience than Chalobah over a longer time period, even if a lot of Hughes experience has been in Championship he's played more minutes for Watford this season than Chalobah.

No Spurs representation.

Currently top of u18 table (south) scoring about an average 5 goals a game with a GD of +27 but you wouldn't believe it from the England youth call ups !

Looks good and poor in equal messures but well worth persavering with for now.

Shaw should put on the back of his shirt Withdrawn instead of his name.

Yeah, defensively he looks a little lacklustre but still very young and I think his positive outweigh the negatives in his game.

Plus we have the full back whisperer in chsrge

Is last game I watched him play (league game) might have been against Woolwich, he was shocking, gave the ball away with almost every touch, not even put under any pressure. But was also very good going forward. I do like him but a long way to go for him to gain even some consistency to his game.

I'm all for it myself... and for 2 reasons:

Firstly, people complain about 'meaningless friendlies' (which quite often, they ARE) ...so why not put a bit of meaning into this one by effectively turning it into a testimonial?

...and secondly (and more pertinantely) depending on where Rooney 'decides' to play himself... will surely mean the night off for either Kane or Dele!

:allitongue::kanegoal: Happy Days!!

Kane will be selected and will play (if deemed fit). He's Englands Captain and best player. Rooney hasn't played as CF for years now, so would imagine he would be playing as a deep-lying midfielder, seeing as Dier is injured maybe instead of him???

But what if his presence blocks Callum Wilson getting a call-up? Arguably the player that deserves to be selected more than anyone. I think this is why friendlies aren't meaningless, it's a chance to bring new players into the squad, improve on aspects of the game that aren't working etc.

I guess the England squad announcement on Thursday ?

What I'd really like to see is in effect 2 squads - one for the friendly which in my view should be used to test out a few players that Southgate hasn't called up but he should take a close look at such as Callum Wilson, Will Hughes, Lewis Cook etc and the other for the match versus Croatia.

And given the friendly is the first match some of those chosen for the friendly might be retained for the Croatia match too.

And I'd certainly like some of the Spurs lads who had the WC and no pre-season to get a rest from the friendly.....

I hate this alphabetical order announcement - impossible to understand and be far better to group players be position.

Rant over - thank god Southgate has finally called up Callum Wilson, long overdue to have a ready replacement for Harry Kane when he's not played.

5 from Spurs - Kane, Dele, Dier, Winks, Trippier

Full review shortly !

I'm guessing the Leicester players are not included due their former Chairman's funeral in Thailand which the Leicester players are attending.
