Match The ENGLAND thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It was poor, but one team had pretty much the same 11 they always put out, the other had 10 changes from the previous game, and a backline that had never played together before. These aren't the sort of things that should just be forgotten about. And as abject as it was at times, we still created some golden opportunities to get a result. Gordon missed an absolute sitter to make it 2-0. Gibbs-White really should have scored after a wonderful bit of play from Eze. Mendy produced a world-class save from Saka, who was otherwise as bad as I've ever seen him in an England shirt. Senegal deserved the win, but I'd still fancy us to dispatch them in a game that really means something and with a stronger 11 out.

I'd say it's certainly been an under-whelming start under Tuchel with more questions than answers. But I don't think it's quite the apocalypse many will make it out to be. At least not just yet.

I just don't get everyones praise of Saka? The bloke is bloody useless. Have any of those so called pundits who sing his praise actually ever watched him play? His only attribute is to cut back on his left and swerve in a cross or shot. Yes this works well on occasion but he is a one trick pony. The rest of his game; tackling back, interplay beating a defender one-on-one is pathetic. Last night was a case in point. He tried to take on his defender to actually cross with his right and the defender took it off him with ease. Didn't try it again. Lost his bottle.
Has anyone noticed the modern game at the top level is becoming all about the wingers. Think of the top teams now: PSG: Doué, Barcola, Kvaratskhelia. Barcelona: Jamal, Fate, Raphinha. Real Madrid: Vinicius, Rodrygo. Liverpool: Sarah, Diaz. Spain: Williams, Yamal. Portugal: Leao, ...I could go on. Well if England are relying on Saka and Gordon you can forget any chance of World Cup glory. I know, I know Saka is a gooner so I/we are predisposed to hate him but come on. Watch him at the top level. There must be someone better? Rant Over.

He's a cracking player and has always done well for England in general. You named a bunch of players, many who aren't as consistent as Saka for club or country.

He's just come back from injury and had a shit game. Shit happens.

Didn’t even register with me that the game was on. Feel sorry for the fans who went but what a stupid, pointless game. Players need a break. A proper break. Season is long and next year is a tournament we need to be ready for. Utterly stupid to play a friendly in mid June. No surprise at all it was poor.

The biggest concern for me is why he's still picking the likes of Walker and Henderson. Not the result or performance. It was a make shift team last night against a decent and extremely determined side, a loss was always on the cards.

Big question marks over Tuchel and his squad selections already. Found some of the selections very very strange so he needed to back it up with performances/results. He didn't.

It feels very much like he is picking the wrong players and not building anything consistent. I get he is using these games to try out new players but he needs to start consistently picking the best players and find out his best team. He has 12 months to get this right. Currently its a mess and he's looked clueless so far.

Refusing to select Wharton because he is u21 is just insane. Wharton is the most likely player to be starting next to Rice at the world cup next Summer so get him in and start working on that midfield! Bringing Henderson is just total madness. Kyle Walker shouldn't be there either. Walker is just taking valuable game time off players like Trent and Livramento. Toney over Solanke was odd! That is before we even get into the Palmer dilema which we seem to no closer to solving because Tuchel is just making too many changes and not trying to make our best players work together.

At the moment he seems obsessed with fitting in as many of our number 10's into the team as possible. We finished the game last night with Bellingham, Gibbs-White, Rogers and Eze all on the pitch. Ridiculous. If you're starting Kane you need pace either side of him. So Saka on the right and either Rashford or Gordon on the left. Wharton and Rice should be anyone's midfield two. It just makes sense. So then you're left with Bellingham, Palmer, Foden, Eze, Rogers and MGW all competing for that number 10 spot. Because that's where they play their best and the role they are most suited to.

Agreed and the squad is unbalanced then when he has picked too many of these players and Foden wasn't even available for this squad. Surely he should be only choosing 1 out of MGW, Rogers and Eze to be in the squad given whoever gets selected is going to be behind Bellingham, Palmer and Foden in the pecking order anyway so unlikely to see any minutes in a tournament. It is crazy the depth of talent we have in that role considering Maddison is not even in the picture atm!

Trying to fit all these players in and then trying to shoehorn one of them into a winger role is just a big problem we are going to keep having. Better off nipping it in the bud by only bring 4 10s max and then selecting actual wingers like Rashford, Bowen, etc so your squad as the right balance.

Its a shame Rice never developed into a proper CDM or 6. Then we could maybe have looked to utlizing him as a sitting CDM and getting two of Bellingham, Palmer, Foden into the midfield 3. But Rice himself has transformed into a box to box 8 who needs a sitting 6 beside him and Wharton is the only English player who looks in anyway proficient in that role. Which means we can only play one attacking mid and it'll probably be Bellingham so no space for Palmer or Foden which will always cause media uproar at every big tournament. Hence back to shoehorning one of them onto the left wing and losing all balance!

You know when the World Cup is held right?

After a long season…

You know when the World Cup is held right?

After a long season…

Every 4 years though, International tournaments have always traditionally been every 2 years.

Now you have friendlies when the season is done, we have a ICC tournament coming up as well in the Summer, Nations League as well, an extended Champions League and Europa League schedule...

When are players meant to have their breaks?

He just needs to be brave and leave some big players on the bench. We have an excellent 11 on paper, but they can only get better together by actually playing them. We should be sending out as close to what he thinks is his strongest 11 game after game with the WC only a year away. Senegal won last night because they were a proper team, a unit, playing with cohesion, all knowing their roles. That will beat a team of individuals more often than not even if the talent isn't on the same level.

But maybe we will go into the World Cup with low expectations for once and surprise everyone.

Wish people would stop saying we have the best squad ever. Who are the top players who have performed at top world level. Kane, Bellingham, Saka was in the team of the tournament in Qatar.
Rice is nowhere near a top international player, cannot control a match, I don’t think any of them can.
Our defence will be nowhere near good enough. Guehi is our best , Stones always injured , Reece James ok but is he fully fit. 18yr old boy at left back who was badly caught out last night.
If Dan Burn is at centre back I wouldn’t even bother going.
We should see what he thinks our best team is away to Serbia in September .
He will have to go with Adam Wharton sooner rather than later.

Expectations will be high regardless of results. Tuchel is meant to be the end game. The elite foreign coach coming in to get the new golden generation over the line.

It is Capello all over again.

I agree with you.

I am just saying you can’t excuse poor performance by citing tiredness at the end of a long season of your aim is to win the World Cup. It’s like complaining that the ball will be round.

Yeah it's not an excuse we were crap, but if you recall we lost 4-0 at home to Hungary a few years back exactly the same Intl break, probably tells you about the players' mentalities more than anything, that said I reckon if they were in a Nations League last 4 they would have rised it.

Stones isn't always injured. He's played more games than just about anybody for England over the last 5 or so years. When tournaments come around he's been available for England every single time.
