Competition The Race for 4th

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

We're re-defining weird atm....

On one hand..... Angry fanbase, major OUT vibes for the manager..... Fortnight from hell, results and performance wise..... Faction of fans accusing the others of having low standards yadda.... Shit, under-invested squad.....

On the other...... 3rd highest goals scored in the league, top of the form table in the league.... Potential back to back top 4 despite being the 6th/7th richest club in the league...... Skipp, Sarr, Porro, Udogie to get excited about......

Are we the 6th/7th richest? I think we may be 4th. Last I checked swiss ramble and deloitte money league we were only behind United, City and Liverpool in terms of revenue. Only slightly ahead of Arse and chavski.

Obviously Newcastle, and Chavs are getting extra funding now which complicates things.

The hope is that we will have a more effective window in the summer with a manager who plays "club signings" and accepts there is a chance they will work out better than some of the players he wanted i.e. Perisic. Someone who realises that sometimes working with other people's ideas is a good thing.

I believe Conte threw this season for a pissing contest with the board. I will never forgive him for that.

If Conte gets Levy top 4 twice which looks like happening then I guess the board can call it a success but yeah let's never go down the win now manager route ever again, we clearly aren't built like that as a club.

Interesting. We are three points better off than we were after 27 Premier League games last season. Played different teams obviously. But league table wise things aren’t quite as bad as being made out. I still think though the wolves defeat could bite us.

I don't think it looks like it will happen per se.

We have our pointless Anfield visit to come and Newcastle away.

We will need to be very good in all other games to guarantee top 4 in my opinion. Very good.

I'll certainly take top four rather than nothing obviously but for me winning a trophy is still bigger until we can really compete for the league or cl . It rankles me when I see the teams that have knocked us out of cups over the last few years and in the the CL barring one miraculous run we generally get beaten by the first decent team we meet in the knock out part .Unfortunately our owners have made their priorities clear so that's our lot with them in charge .

We drew last season at Anfield though (we effectively cost them the title), and whenever we've played Liverpool these past seasons, we've always been better than them, only being done by stupid misses (Bergwijn, Lo Celso, Sissoko, Kane, Dele) and absolute calamities at the back in the 90th minute. Not to mention that this Liverpool team is way worse than the ones of the past, a game against United where everything they touched somehow went in doesn't change that.

I'm more scared of Spurs being Spurs rather than Liverpool or Newcastle, although as I've said I don't care that much about top 4.

We were in that position after having fired our new manager 14 games in, and having to start a midfield of Skipp, PEH and out of form Dele, Lucas as a starter etc.

We've bought a lot of players since then, Conte had his much hyped pre-season, and we look worse than ever.

Needless to say, I counted these things as they both very much come into play on a practical level.

Why would I not iinclude the richest club in the world and a club that thanks to a massage from the gov & the EPL has just spent 600m in one season having had 1.6bn in debt wiped clean.......?

Yep. I never said we weren’t anything but a dog shit to watch over the season as a whole. Points on the board is fine but could easily be better.

No Europe, no domestics cups.

No excuses.

4th is ours to lose at this point in time.
Plenty of football to play but Liverpool next 4 are huge.

City away
Chelsea away
Woolwich home
Leeds away.

Could do with them getting 7 points or less from those 4 matches.

Plus bearing in mind we have to go up there end of April which we can put down as a six pointer.

What annoys me is we have missed out the winning part and just jumped straight to 4th place is out everything! :contefacepalm2:
As much as I hate Levy I understand the need for the club to become more financially successful to compete , it’s just we don’t seem like we have a proper plan , we just seem to have got lucky with Poch and have had a scatter gun approach since.

Poch had inherited a young group of players - Lloris, Vorm, Rose, Walker, Vertonghen. Dembele, (Mason and Bentaleb - Poch's preferred CM's in first season), Eriksen, Kane and added following summer Alderweireld, Dele and Son, but after that pretty much nobody of quality joined despite Sanchez at about £40m (Poch liked his play in an EL final of Ajax v ManU), Janssen (Poch again scouting him at an |England v Netherlands match), Moura at about £25m but nobody at the same level as the inherited batch. But the original group formed about 2nd youngest team

Roll forward to 2019, team run into ground and no longer young - probably about 4th oldest. So it must have been obvious to all a significant rebuild was needed to get younger players. Covid screwed us in 2020 with income drying up and european clubs worse off than PL so cannot buy our unwanted players - and that extended into summer 2021.

Step forward Mr Paraciti to handle a rebuild, initially with little cash (same as rest of PL) bringing in initially Romero, Emerson, Sarr and Gil in summer 2021, followed in January 2022 by Bentancur and Kulusevski and summer 2022 bringing in Richarlison, Bissouma, Forster, Perisic (I suspect Conte's wish), Spence (no decent RWB's available so Paraciti's choice) etc.

Paraciti cannot be blamed for Richarlison being out injured for about 3 or 4 months, Bissouma injury/illness and indeed Bentancur's injury. Its just bad luck this season (not helped by World Cup taking out 6 weeks out of season, increasing game frequency and resulting in player fatigue/risk of injury), and their absence might be a factor in Conte seeming to abandon anything except the league - and that's his choice.

So I don't agree there is no plan in place. Even with the players we have now we have the semblance of a decent squad, and if we can bring in 4-6 players in the summer (eg GK and at least on CB, an alternate for both Son and Kulusevski and possibly a 2nd LWB) we will have covered most of the remaining gaps in the squad.

With a decent manager in place and that squad, then next season 23/24 we should have enough quality and depth to do well in PL and either or both CL and a domestic cup ..... although I'm sure another player intake in summer 2024 will be helpful in adding more quality and depth to the squad.

But in short, since Poch left, 2 summer transfer windows badly affected by covid screwing up everybody's economics, but Spurs in particular as we most needed a rebuild. So the squad rebuild has taken a lot longer than it should - fans don't like it and I doubt if Levy likes it either..... and 20/20 hindsight is that I haven't liked our manager choices either (ManU fans had 6 years post Ferguson of poor manager choices so we are not the only ones). But c'est la vie

Ironically despite the current furore surrounding the club; we would have even more points than we do if it wasn't for that awful spell where Hugo & Dier spaffed a good 15+ points up the wall!
