It's called squad depth. City had Laporte playing really well, they bought Diaz and he moved them up a level. Depth and competition for places brings better performances and less complacency within the squad

Hincapie is a very good cb (his natural position) and a decent lb. Very good feet but a bit short to play cb in PL. Vdv and Udogie are better. He will be a reserve. I understand your point, but your team have several holes and it's crazy spend 60m for a luxury signing without first fix what is missing.

Hincapie costs too much to bring him in as a backup to van de Ven. I also doubt he would come if he isn't first choice.
We need to look at a player that would cost similar to what we paid for Danso and would be happy with a squad rotational role.

But if Chelsea signed him as their 23rd CB that would be perfectly normal behavior for a big club, right?

Stop perpetuating the small club mentality that means we get to the same injury crisis every year and can’t manage it.

At this point its probably more likely he goes gooners or pool.

They can do 2-4 big deals in the time it takes us to fail at 1 you know

Sorry but we need to kick this weak minded approach of "he ain't gonna sit on the bench behind Harry Kane, VDV, whoever.... in to touch.

We seem to be the only big club who's fans use this as an excuse to justify our lack of top signings .....and we're hardly in such a financially perilous position where our fans also need to worry about him costing too much.

It's no longer an 11 a side game mate. Its a squad game. Where 16 players are likely to feature every match. And the squad is essentially competing in 2 parallel leagues in the Premier League and the European Champions League, as well as 2 further domestic cup competitions.

No player will expect to be a first choice starter in every match in the modern game.

You just finish up with inevitable injuries, week squad depth and the subsequent collapse in form we've seen so many times before.

Bek has a hideous goalscoring record at every single level. Hes young but hes just never scored goals.
That goal he scored against us probably accounts for roughly 20% if his entire goal tally in his career.

This attitude needs to change. You need 24 players all of starting 11 quality.
Exactly

The reason why we lost the PSG game was because we were able to compete with them for 60 odd minutes right up until the subs

Come sub time they could bring on Ruiz, Ramso, Mbaye and Lee.

We could bring on Archie Gray, Bergvall, a 10 percent fit Solanke and Tel.

At that point we ceased being half as competitive and had our backs to the wall for the last 25 minutes.

You need a minimum of 15-16 players that could be considered first eleven players.

Add on the number of competitions we're in and the need for rotation and that number goes up to 18-19

We should hopefully start to hear more on the savinho deal today.
It would be the biggest and hardest of the failed attempts to take by far if it doesn't happen!

There is actually a good argument to say Hincapie could be the most important signing. You look to keep the defence consistently solid and at a high level and give yourself a solid base and a chance in every/most games. It doesn’t seem like it now because the season has just started, 1 game a week VDV/Romero/Spence fit. But it won’t stay like that.

buy attacking players(which we should do as well) then having to rely on Davies(again no offence Ben) might upset the balance and identity of the team a bit more
