Transfers The Summer Transfer Edging Thread 2025

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Unbelievably we then followed it up by not signing a single player in the following January window either. And if memory serves me right, we actually weakened the squad by selling Moussa Dembele.
Why are people still trying to justify this or absolve the board 7 years on. It's bizarre behaviour

More to the unanswered point, why do believe any of the unsubstantiated waffle you produce.

There's not a shred of evidence, nor a single word uttered from Poch to support that the club didn't want to, try to, or failed to sign a player. There's quite a bit pointing out Poch didn't want to sign anyone for the sake of it

e.g. this from the man himself

"It's difficult to understand for people that Tottenham didn't sign or sell a player, but sometimes in football you need to behave differently and we're happy with our squad," he said. "If we cannot improve our squad it's better to keep it together."

"The market was crazy. The World Cup changed the mind of everyone. The transfer market finishes today and people who understand it better than myself will debate whether it is a good or bad idea to be different to the rest of Europe.

"We have a very good squad, with very good players, and it is very difficult to add players to that. We didn't sell players and with 25 in the squad it is difficult to add.

"It's not about adding because it's fashionable to sign players. [It's about] if you really need [them] or not and then if you can get your target or not.

I genuinely thought people have been trolling all this time when they said we didn't make signing because of Levy, it was a massive thing at the time and well known that Poch didn't want any players in 2018, I didn't actually think people truly believed anything else haha

It wasn't Hoddle actually, it was Redknapp who confirmed it

“[Pochettino] didn’t want any players - I know that for a fact. He was happy with his squad. He feels he’s got enough, he can juggle around, Son can play through the middle.

And Levy told the trust that Poch didn't want to sign anyone for the sake of it

Wasn't 18 months - Moura was signed in 17/18 January window. It was just the one season. I've heard "18 months" and "2 seasons" that has become a weird urban legend. It was Poch who didn't want to spend though, confirmed through a few sources but most recently by Pleat.

Spending over £50m each on two players isn't really consistent with "budget" or being tight. It's a lot higher than a lot of other clubs.

The issue we've had, really, is that the calibre of player to being PL champions is a bit of a challenge. The players that have enabled such a feat have been punts and it's hard to think of any that are not just being flattered with retrospective.
I would argue that the vast majority of players that have helped push a team to a title have been signed for relatively small amounts, rather than the equivalent of £100m+. Pretty sure a few weeks ago this was talked about and almost every signing of that £80m+ calibre hadn't exactly set the world alight.
Lucas Moura signed 31stJanuary 2018

Tanguy Ndombele signed 2nd July 2019

517 days between those dates. I'll let you work out how many months that is.

All that Levy loving has gone to your head.

Just saying that to cover the failings of the club isn't he?

No manager could ever think for himself - they do what puppet master Levy want them to do.

Sure they say they're happy but Steve on Twitter says their eyes give them away.

And Levy told the trust that Poch didn't want to sign anyone for the sake of it

I recall him being a bit sulky about players like Nkoudou being signed by our transfer genius Mitchell, and spent a long time going on about how it was really difficult to move out players who he didn't want in the squad. As noted, we had a full squad for 2018/19 and his opinion at the time seemed to be that he only wanted to sign players that would go straight into the first team because he didn't want to leave players out of the squad registration if they weren't adding anything.
("If we cannot improve our squad it's better to keep it together.")

The trouble seemed to be that he was hell bent on certain players that weren't available at that time, like Ndombele.
("It's not about adding because it's fashionable to sign players. [It's about] if you really need [them] or not and then if you can get your target or not.)

Bearing in mind we got to a CL final after not changing the team, you have to wonder why people obsess over it so negatively. Liverpool just won the PL title after basically adding no one to the team.

Well if you want to be technical, that's 17 months not 18.

But if you're being a total pedant, then that's like saying any club that doesn't make a winter transfer window signing goes a year without signing anyone.

No one says that though because it's mental. Nice bingo card for the insult though
