Transfers The Summer Transfer Edging Thread 2025

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Ndombele was just poor scouting combined with changing the managers to ones who have no need for that type of player even if he didn’t get lazy. Our scouting and general decision making needs to be far better and I am a little more hopeful with Paratici/Lange/Vanai structure we will be better placed when we do spend big to make better choices. We can’t live in the shadow of the Hitchen era, that’s gone thankfully.

Ndombele is an extreme example of a bad purchase.

A more typical issue is Bissouma - looked very promising/effective at Brighton and a relative 'bargain' at £25m/£30m ish. But inconsistent with probably more 3/10's than 8/10's (although good showing in EL final) ..... we need to move him on and we may or may not get our money back, but what is certain is more consistent better players could have been bought for similar money.

But that's not untypical - probably 50% of all transfers do not live up to pre transfer expectations. And even the best DoF will find that not every player will live up to expectations..... which is where people come back to 'overpaying' for a couple of players might be done but its a risk as sometimes it doesn't work out. Do it a few times, cross your fingers and we may well be fine. Do it all the times, and we are bound to be found out - its the law of averages in play that some transfers will fail despite best intentions

Eze, Embeumo, Tapsoba, Hjulmand, Mcatee, Rios,
ter Stegen, Guehi, Bastoni, Antonee, L. Davies (bench), Barella/Valverde/Goretzka, Eze, Mbeumo, Gyokeres/Osimhen/...Kane (yes, I went there).

That's what a serious club that's just won the Europa League (whilst finishing 17th in the PL) & genuinely wants to compete on all 4 fronts would do. Especially when said club is wealthy as fuck, got loads of PSR wiggle room, a gamechanging stadium, most expensive ST, highest paid chairman etc etc.

But Levy.

I'm really glad you don't want good value - my house could be yours for only £5m. Well worth it for a discerning buyer who avoids the plebian idea of value for money
I said why do ALL have to be good value? Was Wirtz good value? VVD? The bald bastards blind spot is seeking value on every single signing and bungling key players. Of course we should look for value and data based players, but not every player. We can overpay on 1 or 2 per year and it won’t impact, make smart decisions elsewhere

Doesn’t always work in football though does it. Is Rice worth £100m, is Wirtz worth £120m, probably not, perhaps 20-30% above what you might expect to pay. It’s overpaying but overpaying to fix what a manager sees as a key weakness. Value for money is good but not when it comes at the expense of team evolution. Looking for value above all else is how we have ended up going through Solomon, Danjuma and Werner for the LW and waste cash.
What?!? You make no sense good sir

How much profit will Red Scum make on the £100m they paid for Rice or the Scouse on the £120M they will pay for Wirtz. The answer is NONE - They will make NO profit!

On the other hand - we got Soloman on a FREE and are about to sell him for what £10 - £15-20M - Return on investment is THROUGH THE ROOF. Pure profit sir! #WINNING!

(sarcasm)

The only criteria is goals across all competitions in matches he was chosen to play in. And he played a lot of minutes. Its not up to you to pick and choose one set of data suiting your agenda.

Son scored and created assists in most of competitions Spurs played in, including EL, which if you might recall we won and gives us a platform to build from. If he had not played those other matches he could well have been able to play more and score in PL.

One fundamental reason why spurs struggled with this season (24/25) was playing 60 games in the season rather than the 40 odd in the previous season - with a consequent need to play both weekend and midweek. That's why all players but one could only manage to play LESS than 40 matches in 24/25 as the frequency of playing took it out of them.

Son played a decent part in 24/25, if he stays at Spurs next season I think he will largely only be able to play once a week to generate goals and assists. If we get a decent offer (and your suggestion of 8m is a long way below his worth) then it - and as players have agency makes sense for all for him to move on to play in a less intense league than Spurs play in, allowing Spurs to find a decent forward to replace him and get the 24 or so goal involvements which Son got in 24/25 which FEW players do as you ought to be aware of..

But if we only get offers of 8m, he's likely to stay.
He had little impact in the PL compared to prior years and we won’t be in the second rate EL so scrub that as a relevant data point

He couldn’t pass a ball forward, gap players or strike the ball. Position didn’t help him but use your eyes, he was a liability.
