Transfers The Summer Transfer Edging Thread 2025

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Again, he was one of the biggest names at the time, just came off a world cup scoring 5 goals.

It was absolutely a statement signing at the time and no matter how much you try and swing it, that's a fact.

Username checks out, well done.
He wasn't top scorer in that tournament and Germany didn't even reach the semis, I'm not saying it wasn't a statement signing for a club that finished 15th the season prior, I'm saying I think Van Der Vaart was at least on par, he played in the world cup final (albeit as a substitute) a few months before joining us. We got lucky that RM decided so late in the day they wanted rid of him and we were fastest to the punch, but he absolutely could have gone to an elite club at the time and would have looked shit hot IMO.
Gazza and Lineker under Scholar were far bigger coups than Klinsmann or anything we ever achieved under Sugar, and arguably ENIC, surely the better example to bring up, especially as Scholar is widely regarded as one of our worst chairmen as well for putting the club into debt.

The dirty secret here that neither side of this debate really wants to admit is that Spurs' heritage in the transfer market is for razzle-dazzle and novelty as much as anything, and under different circumstances Levy might persuasively argue that he's getting rid of that element on purpose because that's not how you win.

Extremely slim pickings then… who would you advise if you had Levy’s ear ?

Yeah self admittedly I don’t have the answer.

I’d would go after the best attacking player we can get. Be it a LW, Striker or CAM

Feel like we get burned trying to fill in specific position holes. What we need are impact players.

Get the best attacking player we can get. And a left sided defender. Call it a window.

I didn't say he was top scorer. I said he scored 5 goals.

Van der Vaart had nothing like the profile Kinsman had at the time, come on. Loved the man, was exciting as anything to get him, but not close to the same profile of reputation.

As for Linekar and Gazza, I'm not here to discuss every big name player we've ever signed. In fact, I didn't bring him up at all. Someone used it as a reference for a "one of the worst owners we've had", but still shows more ambition than Levy, who has the means, but chooses to do the cheap option x3 instead of the one big name.

Obviously selling Isak

But you have to respect their mentality to pump most of it into a striker for 90m

Levy just isn’t built that way. It’s the most flaccid mentality to transfers that he has.

Only if it goes through, if Utd are serious about matching Newcastle's bid they will get him, CL football or not. How they will afford to do that without having managed to get a fee for a player in this market and having had well publicised FFP issues in recent seasons is anyone's guess, but I absolutely will not be surprised if the player only wants Utd and they get him by virtue of letting Newcastle work out the fee and swanning in at the 11th hour to hijack the deal.

If United pull that window after losing the EL, I don’t really know where Levy has left to turn.

His model clearly can’t close the gap for recruitment, even if we win things

United will sack a few more club workers groundsmen etc to balance the books. 🤪

I mean rodrygo is def worth the 90 mill euros if sesko is going for it for sure. I wouldn't discount rodrygo either Liverpool want isak and chelsea want simons Woolwich eze etc. Not alot of options and also if Madrid are pushing him out who knows but I also admire a player wanting to fight for his place there

I don't know if Amorim is going to work out in the PL and if Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko is enough to get him there but certainly they are backing their man and showing ambition, far more than can be said for Frank thus far. They have identified their problem is a severe lack of goals and sign 3 players who are all coming off very good goalscoring seasons. Kudus and Palhinha both improve the XI but not to the same degree that Cunha and Mbeumo do for United IMO.

We got him for £2m off Monaco, he had struggled there in his last season, was 29 and had a bad injury the year prior, they finished 9th in Ligue 1, we made more money selling Vinny Samways in the same window. Anyone who thinks that was a big money superstar signing is kidding themselves, it was an opportunistic punt that worked out very well, we finished 15th in 93/94, if he was such a global superstar he would not have been coming to us.

Klinsmann was on bench getting splinters and needed to play to get into the Germany squad.

I'm told that by chance Sugar was on his boat in Monaco and a friend put him in touch with his Klinsmann's agent (also in Monaco with Klinsmann) who was delighted to come to Sugar's luxury boat, and on 2nd visit bringing Klinsmann. Accident of timing but great signing. at the time

What does it say about Rodrygo that none of the huge clubs have made an approach for him?
Other needs possibly how many of the top 6 barring us need a lw, maybe Woolwich but look how much they spent already. City have options everywhere. Liverpool spent alot especially if they get isak for over 140 mill.

Chelsea signed gittens likely getting xavi simons to cover those areas.

Man utd possibly but in reality they too want sesko and will throw what newcastle offered. Strike while there is a possibility. For me the only way we get him is if Madrid force it like a van der vaart situation. 20% likely 80% we won't get him but who knows
