Opportunistic is a narrative term used to downplay our signings. There’s always a negative narrative ready for any signing we would make.
We have spent a lot RELATIVE to our rivals. Look at the data these past few years.
The issue has been:
1) Quality
2) a lot of potential that is several years off being CL quality
We’ve combined 5 years of poor recruitment with a couple of years of buying players that won’t be CL quality for another 3-5 years. That has left our squad looking short of quality in key areas.
We desperately need a midfield passer who can come straight in this season.
We wanted a Number 10 ie MGW before Maddison got injured. Logically we should need 2 now. Surely to God there would have been more team 1 player on our target list so why no offer gone on? New one instead of MGW + Grealish loan would be very good. We also need to replace Sonny.

We ain't done, fcuk Wednesday but if we somehow fail to sign more players, a league position of 10th to 14th is likely.

Flip side to that is if we go and sign a 10,a centre forward who can score goals and a very good left winger then the whole thing looks different and we could challenge for top 4,get through champs league and still outside chance of the cups.

I’d actually argue that the key is back to good ol’ fashioned scouting.
Now every top side in Europe has access to the same extensive high-level data on players, the key is to actually watch and study the players and decipher who’s a statistical phenomenon and who is an actual game changer on the pitch.
I’m a huge data person but it needs to be used to inform decisions and not make them. I’d love to see how players like Dembele and Carrick would have looked on those wagon wheels.

The crazy thing and Levy is clearly a smart men, is that if he doesn't give Frank 2/3 more players of objective quality, all the focus will be on him.
Provide Frank with some ballast (not the nane of a player I am aware of), then the pressure is on Frank.
