Couple or three observations on your post.

This is true, but we were never in the PL era at a higher level competing with the likes of Scouse, United, Chelsea, Woolwich and now City, we simply never were.
Having the finances or not we simply won't be competitive with any of those teams mentioned, based on the clubs transfer policy. This is well known, and I never see the benefit of post after post in here of fans stating the obvious.
Far better to look at us from the next set of clubs below the elite, Newcastle, Villa, Fulham, and Brighton (now Everton and indeed Palace) as our main competitors for a top six, or seven position.
Do we like it, well no, but it is what it is, whilst ENIC owns us, so instead of us all getting bitter and twisted about it, why not embrace what we currently have?
Finally, i see no need for both Lange and Paratici to be employed by the club if the only players we can attract are those opportunistic targets and youngsters (i am not knocking some of our young talent) where we just buy in two or three per window?
Why do we need to waste three hundred grand or more on two scouts who produce this sort of return?
We now have a very young squad, likely the youngest starting eleven in the PL and i hope that over the next coupe of seasons Frank can develop them into a side that plays good attacking footie, that entertains, and possibly beings success at our level of expectations and not some fantasy idea that we can win the league.
We simply cannot.

Any no fuss, slower deep lying midfielder who is tidy gets overhyped early in their career as being generational. See Winks, Skipp. Later will get criticized for sideways passing, getting circles run around them.
Agree solid young player but people see them and project they will just continue to exponentially get better. When they usually don’t, if anything their fearless of youth dissipates with experience and they become more cautious and mediocre. He’s a 30m player currently. Pushed up to 50-60 based on potential if he stays healthy and does improve. But 80-100 is nuts imo.
