My dad used to avoid games and watch it later or watch highlights on MOTD.
My grandad (mum's side) lived with us. He used to walk in and say things like "have they scored the goal yet" or leave the room after the goal/final goal had been scored.

I was once out for a cup game and setup the VCR to record it (that shows how long ago it was).
I then phoned my wife to check it was recording ok and she said “yes, it’s in extra time”.
