Sell a player who scores goals whilst retaining players who don't and no doubt watch a fortnight go by with little or no sign of incomings.

It's just farcical if it happens and staggering if it doesn't.

As for who we might buy, it's not worth contemplating.

Incredible.

Let's stop right there.

He's had one good season at Frankfurt, a huge fee, and PSG have been desperate to offload him.

He's no Erling Haaland, and he's not even at Soldado levels of established forward. There isn't much talent - he can barely control the ball and can't score headers from 4 yards out

He was outstanding form Juve last season, 10 in 22 and they wanted to buy him but not at what PSG wanted for him.

At Frankfurt he scored 26 in 50 games.

That's a strike rate of one in two for two different clubs in two different leagues.

Now tell me why his "one good season" bullshit rings true when he comes to Spurs.

He's a very good player, but here is being played out of position, and has no support, and has picked up two big injuries.

Fucking obvious why he is struggling, and he would be stupid to stay at this shitshow of a club.

He will go back to PSG or another good club and score a shitload of goals.

In the last year (365 days), these are the number of 'progressive passes' each of our midfielders has made per 90

this season is in parenthesis

source

Bentancur3.46 (2.92)
Palhinha3.16 (3.23)
Bergvall3.65 (3.95)
Sarr3.29 (3.42)
Xavi Simons5.80 (6.34)

So, oddly enough, all of them have more progressive passes per 90 this season than they did last season (assuming last 365 is approx 50/50), except for Bentancur (by a fraction).

We just have shit midfielders in that regard
This is why I find it difficult to look beyond the squad and who is available as the obvious answer for why our general play is so torrid, there's some very short memories on here with comments like "at least Ange had us playing football", Ange had us playing absolute shit with that very same midfield for months on end, except he had Solanke, Kulusevski and Maddison available for long stretches of that period.

Palhinha looks in retrospect a more and more bizarre move, feels like pretty much the same profile of player as Bentancur if a little more polished defensively, Sarr and Gray feel less like an out-and-out 6 but still both busy-body ball winning midfielders without much creative spark, we have a midfield full of water carriers, and were in clear and desperate need of an 8 before Maddison's injury and Xavi's signing. I'm not going to deny that Frank probably could have been more cavalier with his team selections and tactics but I find it hard to suggest he or anyone would have done any better with this squad.

The ownership have well and truly sold the fans of this club down the fucking river over the last 5 seasons, highest ticket prices in the league for Del Boy level market deals. We targeted MGW well before Maddison's injury which must mean Frank had machinations of playing them together in a 3 with MGW as an 8, why did we just never go in for another option there? Surely even Frank's biggest detractors can admit we would likely look far better at present with a progressive passer in at the 8? Smacks to me of opportunism in the market, we haven't and won't change, never going to address the needs of the team, always a few pieces short and falling further and further behind with every passing window.

I guess Souza will likely be the first buy if we can stump up an extra million or so. Pathetic as we’ve needed a lb for years as cover and we are still shopping in sub £10m ranges.

Frank can’t hide behind squad depth as he was key in getting rid of Johnson without having anyone in so far that can replicate his output

Of all the positions, I don't mind us going cheap at LB too much. I know some people on here hate Udogie, but I think on form he's decent, and the main thing is having some genuine left-footed cover and competition for that spot.

I do think we really do need to go big on a top LW and CM, though. If getting Souza in for cheap means we can spend big money on those two positions I'm all for it. Doesn't sound like we're prioritising a CM, though, worryingly.

No quality player is going to sign for Spurs in January unless they are assured of taking Johnson's place in the Champions League squad. Nobody of quality is coming to Spurs to play in the EPL for 10th.

Kulu, Dragusin and Tel will all be tapping up the coach for that spot already and it will be interesting to see if Grey, Bergvall, Sarr and Davies need to be looking over their shoulder.

If Solanke and Kulu are close to a return, I can't imagine Spurs will be signing any attacking players. Tel, Solanke, Kudus, Kolo Muani, Scarlett, Richy, Odobert already competing for the front 3 sports.

Its insane that 16 minutes after we sell Johnson, our only fit RW comes up injured.

At all times we need depth- the club trying to skate by with one fit player in certain positions is embarrassingly incompetent.

Fit spurs:

ST: RKM, Richy, Tel
LW: Richy, Odobert, Simons, Tel
RW: Kudus(?)
CAM: Simons
CM: Bergvall, Gray, Sarr
CDM: Bentancur, Palhinha
LB: Udogie, Djed, Davies
RB: Djed, Porro
CB: Romero, VdV, Danso, Dragusin
GK: Vicario, Kinsky, Austin

Did Ben do enough v Sunderland for you to want to take a chance on him for the rest of the season at LB, or nah?

Unless Frank is sacked, there's no point in bringing in more crap the next manager doesn't want. This season is done for.
Yea- I'd rather they focus on getting the squad fit and see what Thomas can do to sort it all out before the end of the season.

My take is that we could be doing a lot better if he would just set us up correctly and play best players in best positions...
