We were going backwards and becoming a mess before Poch left.

Again, there's this massive revisionist narrative about the end of Poch's tenure. After Boxing Day 2018, we closed the 2018-19 season on a 3-2-7 (11 points from 36) run in the league. We lost a LC semi to Chelsea and 3 days later bombed out of the FA cup away to Crystal Palace.

Getting past City on away goals in the CL quarterfinal was massive, and earned us a fortuitous draw against Ajax (who we still needed a Moura Miracle to get past).

Pochettino then, ludicrously, went on the record and said he'd quit if we won the CL because it would be the end of the project. He/we then proceeded to shit the bed in Madrid.

He came back and we started the new season 3-5-4 (19 points from 36). Continuing from the previous season, we'd won just 30 points from a possible 72 since Boxing Day 2018 (almost a full calendar year). That form over 38 matches (and again, we're talking 24 here so its not an isolated blip) is pace for 47.5 points.

On top of the poor league form, we lost in the LC to fucking Colchester. And we'd drawn with Olympiacos and been hammered by Bayern in the CL.

Poch was justifiably sacked. Its just the cold hard truth. He deserved it. He had run his course, and had come up narrowly, painfully, short on several occasions.
He wasnt jusitiably sacked imo. I reckon levy might have got pissed off poch met fergie in london. Or levy didnt listen to poch saying we needed a rebuild lProbably a mixture of both.

How did you find Japan? I was there for the Marathon in early March. I was blown away by everything about the country, the culture, and the people.
Mainly good, but had a couple of hiccups - suitcase was delayed by two days, couldn't see Mt Fuji, the Ninja palace was closed on the day we were there, found the subway very confusing, got a dozen bites on my legs on my last day and the hot and humid weather played havoc with my hair!
But the temples, shrines and castles were amazing: Hiroshima was harrowing and moving; the hot springs, especially the blue one, were jaw-dropping; I had a great time at a traditional tea ceremony, dressed in a kimono. I found Japan so clean, didn't see anyone on the streets and the people are so friendly and helpful, and so respectful to old folk.

At the end of 2018 we were 1 point off the top (but with an extra game played)..... We then threw away a comfy lead against Wolves to lose 3-1 (conceding 3 goals in the last 12mins).

It was a watershed game..... We never really recovered.

Then 2 months later this happened:

Poch was never the same after that; getting shook by Mike Dean.

Well, that can be your opinion. You haven't really supported your opinion with any facts, however. I have - prior to Ange, Poch's last 24 games were as bad as Spurs had been since Ramos.

The end of both men's time at Spurs is somewhat similar - shit league and domestic cup results propped up by a European cup run that was partially assisted by fortuitous draws.

Ange was more shit in the league, and had more assistance from fortunate draws, but also managed to close the deal and lift a cup. And no, I'm not putting them in the same category - before 2018-19, Poch was magnificent...he simoly ran out of magic.

Boy, I wonder what happened in Summer 2018 :ange-hmm:
Not wrong. Of course, its a matter of opinion and speculation where the slider bar of blame lands. For sure both Levy and Poch share the blame for being unable to compromise and successfully identify and sign players that fit the budget and needs.

What we do know is in the summer of 2019 Levy capitulated and signed, for a record fee, Ndombele who Poch had been lobbying to sign for over a year. And we know how well that turned out....

:ange-blow:

Anyway, Thomas Frank is going to win the treble and some people will still be complaining on TFC. Not me.

Indeed. And dare I say, Poch travelled the same path as Ange - abandoned the league to focus on the European Cup due to injuries limiting his squad options.

By all accounts from the various rumor mills at the time, Poch handed in his resignation, but the club didn't accept it and wanted him to stay on. I suspect they he knew his stock was high - and wanted to join a bigger club. His disinterest in the 19/20 season suggests he was looking for a way out.

Same defence coach (Matt Wells) as last season .....
I think he improved individuals (like Spence) , but the overall system (Ange-ball) was flawed. You cannot defend successfully with 2 slow CBs (4th and n5th choice) on the halfway line, the FBs on the edge of the opponents box, and the #6 making underlapping runs mid way in the opposition half

It’s interesting that they are split as attack and defence coaches. I would have thought a better way to split them would be in possession coach and out of possession coach. Maybe it’s the same thing…

Surely is the same thing.

Can’t be that one coaches the attackers and the other coaches defenders
Yeah, maybe but common sense can go out the window with Spurs. Does worry me a bit if Wells is coaching our press. It was so shambolic last year. I’d imagine the structure of it will have Frank’s direct input to start with and then it’ll be more about constructing sessions to implement it where Wells will have some freedom.
