Those of us who watched the game did.

According to Maureen the Moaneen though, he and his staff just sat there playing games on their ipads.

Makes you wonder what on earth some of the posters on here were smoking :levylol:
Crack. Lots of positives and negatives but miles better than last season. The centre midfield is something that will need to be fixed in Jan IMO, I don’t see solutions but let’s see! That handicaps the attackers tbh

How much of the toothlessness in front of goal against Villarreal was simply poor execution on the players part?

Kudus in particular dribbled himself silly about 5 or 6 times when he had a fairly straightforward pass available that would have created a chance.

Sarr misplaced a pass into Xavi that would have created a potentially dangerous chance inside the 6 yard area.

I’m sure Frank knows what he wants to work on with the fellas but to my eye, it wasn’t so much a tactical issue as it was an execution issue on the players themselves.
Not sure I agree as have seen the same against Bournemouth and West Ham for long periods. There isn’t a great deal of movement through the middle

It’s nice to have a proper manager again and see genuine strategy out on the pitch.

I think we’re rotating well at the moment, he definitely learnt from that Bournemouth game about the midfield combination.

The attacking play at the moment is not great, but that was always going to take time to develop. Not only is it a new manager with new ideas, but it’s also a nearly completely changed front line - Simon’s, Kudus, Muani. BJ isn’t getting much of a look in currently, Madders, Kulu and Solanke all injured, Son and Werner gone. It’s only Richy that’s getting regular time from last season.

Defensively we look like a real football team again

As much as there are improvements to be made attacking wise, it’s still early days, and I think he’s been brilliant so far.

Yesterday showed there is still plenty of work to do. We wont know what this team is until Nov/Dec time but we certainly need a better balance. I noticed that Frank uses the same language Ange used when we were crap i.e. we did not hit our levels. I fucking hate that phrase. Rather than stating the obvious and blaming the players tell us what your doing that is seemingly not resonating with the player and what your going to change so we do hit a level that puts the fear of god into other teams. There is 100s of millions of £'s of attacking talent on the field so I don't prescribe to the view that the players are somehow the reason why levels aren't being hit. Sort it out.

It’s so much easier to coach a team defensively and holding a shape.

The biggest problem we have now is a lack of a clinical finisher.

Unless we create a lot of chances we are going to struggle.

Think its a bit like Pochs first season although he took on a side that finished 7th not 17th and it was a less competitive league back then. We were pretty dismal until December that first season, then went on a good run but there was still the odd horror show like a 3-0 defeat to Stoke and a home defeat to Tim Sherwoods Aston Villa.

Its not gelled yet, there are going to be some really shit performances but we just have to hope we continue picking up wins while certain players get upto speed. Certainly think talk of top 3 or 4 is premature though. This is a work in progress and if we're fighting it out for 5th with Newcastle come April/May then we've done well.

He will keep learning and begin to know what works in match situations and what doesn't.

Its been said a few times but the main areas of improvement is ball retention, progression and attacking patterns.

Im hoping he is brave v Brighton and makes some changes that may not be too popular. Theres 2 or 3 players im really interested to see come into the team.

This is not going to be popular at all but for Brighton id like to see the following.

Porro------Romero----Vdv-------Udogie
-----------Palhinha------Gray--------------
Kudus------------Simons--------Odobert
---------------------Muani-------------------

Left footer at left back, somebody out left that can play intricately and link up with simons, muani up top.
Gray to keep the base strong and allow the attackers freedom to concentrate on attacking. I think he gets unnecessary stick most of the time.

We've been lucky. Our XG and xxpts is pretty shit, we've overscored it by 3.06 goals - more overscore than anyone else in the leaguen- and we've massively underscored our XGA - 3.89 - also more than anyone else in the league.

And that's with a fully fit defence and a proper designated DM/6, a new bunch of forwards who also work harder without the ball, and a much more pragmatic approach.

XG is a load of fucking nonsense.

Tell that to this fellow!!

It is for isolated matches, it isn't for working out trends although a 4 match trend is a tiny sample size especially for a manager in his first season.

For sure, but I dislike the way some people use it, like it's a definitive way of telling the story.

Absolutely anybody with two eyes can watch us this season and see we look so so so much more defensively solid than last season. Vicario is nowhere near as exposed, our CBs are nowhere near as much exposed. VDV isn't having to do 30 sprints back towards goal every game, we aren't given up anywhere near enough chances to the opposition as we have done the last two seasons.

So that's what annoys me about XG. Like all statistics, it can be useful when used alongside a myriad of other statistics and context, but just saying XG showed this, so this is what it means about our defence is just nonsense.

Yes, last night Villareal probably should have scored one goal from their few chances, Bournemouth probably should have scored 4 or 5, but generally we look a really good side defensively under Frank so far.

Absolutely we aren't going to maintain this clean sheet record all season long, but it's a vast improvement, you can see that just by watching our games.

It’s not for isolated matches, it’s for periods of 15+ matches. There’s a huge amount of variability in the stat based on things like big chances that never turn into a shot and rebounds. Over a long sample size, the expectation is these will somewhat balance out between clubs.

I noticed Vicario hit the ball long quite a bit yesterday. Was great to see. The playing out from the back thing is beyond rediculous last season.
Huge part of why we've been able to be stable, defensively.

We're not gonna be a route one team, but I'm not surprised to see Frank cut all that shit out that was causing so many problems for us in the first phase, leading to dumb goals we gave away for free.

Made our whole defence totally crackpot.

He's fixing the fundamentals and will then build out our game to completion, as we go.

Our whole game is having to be rebuilt, so people will have to give him a little time.

hes still sussing the squad out, theres going to be games where the balance is off while hes doing this, like last night.

breath of fresh air after bournemouth him admitting he got it wrong but he learnt. if he can do all his learning while we are still getting results and keeping clean sheets, we will be in a very good place!

to be fair the back 4 is solid as fuck, its getting the midfield balance right for the different types of games, and the front 3 is still a worry to be honest.

grealish would of changed the whole dynamic, the ball would stick up with him and he would bring the midfield and the ST into the final third, consistently. huge blunder not getting him, that was our palhinha level signing for the front 3.

Spot on.

Damn is his football predictable? Drilling the team so much is why he did well with a limited budget, but he's now having Ferraris and still drive them like Skodas. I'm afraid he will always be this way. Solid team, risk averse with a good defence, but very unexciting and too predictable.

He really loves his long throws and set pieces. Yes, it's good to have that edge, but can't be the only area where we stand out.
