It's both. Mid table manager. Mid table players
Whilst the recruitment has not been the best, the squad building over the last three years has been pretty good until last summer. We do have a decent squad (albeit decimated by injuries). Players quite simply look worse than they are due to the tactics.

For example, VdV is one of the best CBs in Europe. Romero is Argentina's captain and a top class CB. Udogie, when in form, is a top LB. Porro of last season showed how good he is. Spence just made it into the England team and was one of our best players last season when playing on the left.

I do not understand the recruitment of Tel. This was reflected in him being left out of the CL squad. And why spend £40M on Gray if he is not going to play regularly and develop? Simons will clearly take time to acclimatise to the pace and power of the PL (a bit like Wirtz at Liverpool). Both are quality players who will come good.

Our problem is in CM (no progressive passers), and up top (injuries to senior players like Solanke, Maddison and Kulusevski have really hurt us).

In CM, picking Palhinha at home against teams like Wolves, Bournemouth and Fulham is incredibly unadventurous and puts a handbrake on the team offensively as he cannot pass the ball forwards. This is coupled with Franks' risk averse football where he only wants to progress the ball up the flanks so as not to lose the ball centrally. It makes us predictable, easy to press and negate, and is why we have seen an xG <0.1 in some of our home games. Take Romero out of the team and we cannot progress the ball at all.

The fans, who pay the most to watch their team in the country, are disconnected from the team. Unthinkable during the EL parade at the end of last season. If ENIC want to keep charging us what they do they need to give us a much better team. No more promising potential signings. Just players who improve our first team, staring with a #6 who can pass the ball, and a CF who regularly scores goals.

I'd seriously be looking at poaching Glasner from Palace. With Vuskovic being first team ready next season, we have a host of CBs who will thrive under Glasner.

You keep sanctimoniously bringing this up as if we didn't all have the best fucking night and loved every minute. I don't give a fuck who we beat - we won a fucking trophy and it's one of the best moments of my Spurs-supporting life.

But equally, in the cold light of morning as adults some of us are capable of taking a step back and looking objectively at the quality of the opposition and what winning that trophy meant as a measure of where we are as a club. By talking about the teams we beat we're not taking away from the joy and glory of the win - we're just stating facts.
The poster you reply to personifies the 'superior fan syndrome' we so often see across these pages.
In reality he's an arrogant, blabbering, buffoon just spouting shite.

The whole “oh they lost all those games due to focusing on Europe” argument is the funniest thing ever.

I’m sorry, a group of players on 80-100k a week + playing in the Premier League had to throw away league matches to navigate ties against Bodo Glimt (average wage lower than Wrexham) and AZ Alkmaar.

Frankfurt .. yeah, ok, a reasonable B tier European team. But we essentially had one knockout tie that it would be remotely acceptable to “throw” matches for.

It’s such a lame excuse. It in fact isn’t why we lost games, we lost them because we were worse than these premier league sides, we got bullied and out-competed and we’re seeing that same group of players lose lots now too.

I’m sure they did have great “vibes” in the Europa league. I’m sure they wish they could play Bodo or Copenhagen every week. It’s where they do all their best work, against players on a fraction of their wage.

Abosolutely.

It is ultimate bogus to talk about "winning mentality" when the competition that you win is 20x inferior to the competition that you pathetically surrender. Winning mentality by losing - that would be pretty good name for some Georgetown level cult...

Go support some other team. We don't need "supporters" like you at our beautiful club. Should be ashamed of yourself speaking about a club legend like you are.

Ange, considering his exit did wonders at this club. 5th place finish in the first season, securing CL football and a trophy in the second.

Seriously, only at Tottenham would we have muppets like you dampening some of our best periods in recent years. Have an evening off init. You can defend Frank without criticising Ange.
Ange is the worst manager for 60 years at this club.

Frank is also underperforming and needs to go,
You fuck off

This is what I have just said on another Fighting Cock forum:

As I said on this Forum over 4 months ago, 10th will be a very good result for us this season given our (limited ability) squad and our demanding schedule.

As of today I would take 13th.

From 12,000 miles away (but having made a pilgrimage to our new Stadium last month) it seems to me that a vast majority of our fans want to believe something that is very different from reality.

We are not a top 6 club at the moment and our performances this season don't give me confidence that we will be for 3 or 4 seasons to come. The cost of our squad is irrelevant on the pitch.

We have problems everywhere but I would start with the midfield where we have no "cut through". When have we seen a clever pass piercing the opposition and playing a forward into a goal-scoring position? And Maddison and Kulu are not the answer - apart from the fact that they will take many weeks to become EPL match fit, remember last season when Maddison went missing against the best opposition and Kulu was often ineffectual. Our best midfield bet at the moment might be Bergvall.

Finally (but acknowledging an Antipodean bias) maybe Ange wasn't so bad after all - at least the players knew what the game plan was and, at least on the surface, they liked him as a gaffer even if (with justification) they wondered about the wisdom of his game plan.......

Also add in how Ange kicked off massively as some fans were happy for city to beat us as it meant gooners weren’t winning the league , he said he wanted to win every game regardless , that’s who he is, mate!

I think his tactics are questionable but you could say that about lots of our managers

For me the real problem at THFC is player complacency, state of the art training ground , amazing stadium , a half arsed mentality from owners .

It’s too easy at Spurs , I bet if we even got that curly haired twat from Chelsea within 6 months he’d have his slippers on & wouldn’t be half the player he is

This is why we need total change at the club , from the top

Saw the Woolwich game against Chelsea and jaysus that's a proper derby. Reece James after the match was asked why there were so many yellow cards and why he thought another player would be sent off and his response was a smile and he said it's a derby.
As much as I hate Chelsea and all they stand for it's great that there are still teams and players out there who actually get what a derby means. Compare that attitude to our club, manager and players in the matches against Woolwich and Chelsea recently. Fucking awful indictment of what we have to watch and support.

Good post. Really good.

I will only offer a slight caveat.

Filth club and that have the benefit of 2 managers who have been at their clubs for a while, and both teans were playing with confidence and a common aim - the title.

We had it under Pochrttino and for the reasons above and we were also blessed with real quality.

It's also a tad unfair to compare us to arguably 2 of the top 5 teams in Europe at present

But I would say I was looking forward to this match and it was a fascinating watch.

Sigh.

United have this issue as well. Something not right at the club mentality, players always end up looking half of what they where before they came.

Forget about Glasner. The harsh reality is that our only remote chance of getting him is if Palace sack him and he’s desperate for a job. Even if he resigns due to lack of support from the board with transfers, he isn’t daft enough to go to another club with the same issues.

As for Frank, I’ve seen enough of him to see that he isn’t going to be at the club beyond this season. I can’t say I’m surprised - he has always been overrated by the media and pundits but is actually an average manager. His time at Brondby ended badly and at Brentford, there was little pressure on him as finishing mid table was seen as a good achievement. However, with all that said - I don’t see the benefit of sacking him now. We are unlikely to get a good manager before next summer and I don’t want another interim. This season is turning in to a write off anyway so just see the season out with Frank and get someone better at the end of the season but I just hope there’s no dithering with the decision like last summer with Ange

Why do you think players turn up against City and United no matter how good or bad they are but fall apart like daisies when we play Woolwich or Chelsea. That indicates something well beyond an issue with quality.

Totally agree. Our players for me look jaded and lack confidence to try anything. They play risk free football and look terrified. Without the ball there is no real aggression and desire to be a cunt. I’d say Micky is the only one who looks like he’s really at it every game.

We have to have an element of chaos in our game to create the passion and desire to hurt the other team physically and with ability. We show none of these qualities because we play such regimented boring way.

I’d love to hear what pish is spouted in the huddle before the game because they start games so badly it’s frightening. Go smash some cunt early, get a shot away early or just anything that gets the heart fucking pumping and gets fans off there seats.

Watching that game yesterday lacked lots of quality but it was two teams going after each other and wanted to hurt each other. We are too fucking nice and that comes from the individual player and comes from the manager.

You get nowhere in this game without nastiness.

Glasner blaming Palace for not spending. Talking like a manager who may have his sights on another job somewhere else, hardly towing the party line (key part starts at 2.20mins):-

If he’s pissed off with Palace for not spending and essentially not backing him in the transfer market, why would he come here?
