Think you're downplaying how competitive the league is this season (outside of Wolves). We were certainly not at our best tonight, so it's not like we gave them our best shot and still lost.
Bournemouth, Brighton, Brentford, etc., aren't like the small clubs in the early 2010s that get battered by all the big clubs. We have to accept that they're all pretty decent right now and unfortunately, much better at recruitment than us.

I think because of the song and dance made appointing him, all the steps they went through, the favourite candidate, a new face to lead a new era etc that they don't want egg on their faces that it's been an unmitigated disaster.

I agree but just saying over the last 6 years i'm not sure we are much better than this. Been coming down the tracks for a long time but people been in denial giving transfer windows 9 out of 10 and thinking every kid is a world beater.
