I wonder what it would take to get Alonso to consider the Spurs job right now?

A large crack pipe probably.

:simonstongue:

The notion that his job could be 'saved' by an ok second half in a game we still lost concerns me. The first half like 90% of our matches this season was trash.

30mins of ok football every few months seems to be the damn bar now. We should have been all over of them in the end but nope, just lost discipline and accepted defeat. All on Frank, just go.
Agreed but it was an ok 20 minutes not a whole half. Standards are so low we are championing an ok 20 as the new gold standard.

Which is why I never understood the people who thought we'd kick on as soon as we broke the trophy curse. Finishing top 4 with no UEL win last season would have been much better for the club moving forward. That 17th place finish will haunt us for years.

I mean... yeah it's now beyond any doubt that Ange Postecoglou was significantly overachieving with the actual level of this squad BUT even with the best will in the world, and injury crisis aside, I don't think even the mighty Greek Australian was getting Top 4... :cautious:

:D

Alonso has had a poor time at Madrid, but in truth there are some many individuals in the team they are almost impossible to manage, he couldn't be any worse than Frank and would be negligent not to enquire, albeit likely to go elsewhere.

Two questions re Xavi Alonso:
1. If he's so good why did RM sack him?
2. Who's going to replace him? Ange I guess.

Managers invariably get sacked. Not sure it's always a marker of their competence as opposed to wrong club at the wrong time.

I was not one sold on Alonso just because of his one season at Leberkusen, totally unlike Wengercwuth that lot, off the back of other success.

Top managers are few and far between in my opinion. To name a few obvious ones

Klopp
Guardiola
Emery
Ancelotti

After this lot, it's an assessment of what makes a quality manager.

Alonso possibly took on too big a job too soon, and like Frank (for different reasons), probably walked into a dressing room and expectation that was too big and too complex for him.

Let's see how he goes in his next job, the same as Frank, because it might just be levels.

Sure

But wouldn’t you prefer to see Simons in the 10?
I prefer to see the most effective player starting.

If Xavi recreates his Villa performance then keep him there. If he decides to hide and be a passenger again then he can play out wide until he decides to man up and not go hiding again.

I get you don't mind hiders and make reasons for diabolical stats, performances and contribution but I don't have allegiances like that (and I fucking wanted us to sign Xavi ffs).

You think Palinha doesn’t hide when it comes to receiving passes under pressure? Hes the most diabolical hide and seek player we have in possession. You just like that he tackles people a lot and scored some freak goals.
