Well it certainly appears that Ange wasn’t just caught up in an angry moment when he said what he did about Werner last night, because he’s effectively doubled down on it today. He’s moderated it slightly by calling it ‘an assessment “ rather than a criticism. I don’t buy that, any player would see it as being dug out.
Werner wasn’t anywhere near good enough last night, or in many other games, and might have deserved being subbed and bawled out or whatever from Ange. But Ange always said he wouldn’t criticise a player in public.
Maybe Ange was feeling vulnerable or doing a bit of self-preservation or buying time, who knows? Most likely, he’s dug out the loan player as the easy option. But he’s opened a door now and he might regret it if he doesn’t do the same with other players who fail to put a shift in. And there’s been a few of those this season.
I’m not necessarily fussed one way or another, but people will now be looking for consistency from him in this regard and in simple terms it will end in one of two ways. The players rally round and support him, and his change for public criticism, or the door he has opened will slam shut fairly hard on his arse on the way out.
