Player Timo Werner

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

That's interesting because it is a deviation from what we're used to seeing with Postecoglou. It suggests he either is trying to communicate a message to the rest of the squad by going after a player in on loan, or it may be a sign he's losing his composure and feels his job is at risk. When journalists are talking about Werner it meant they weren't talking about another uninspiring team performance.

His comments were getting more media attention this morning than the result did; so make of that what you will......

I’m with you on this. Werner should use it as a tool be embarrassed about and go prove him wrong. Nothing wrong with getting your balls kicked in public. They get their balls kicked in public by us who go to the games anyway so fucking deal with it. Maybe harder management is needed rather than fucking about being nice to people all the time.
I just wish Ange would be more vocal on the side and he might get more out these imposters.
I agree Werner should use it as fuel.

I just find it weak from Ange to call him out because he can't call anyone else out and he's an easier target as only on loan.

Son... he's his captain and just has much more influence than him.

Johnson.. is 50m investment

Maddison.. already had bit of a tiff with apparently.

Bissouma..needs him because Bentancur suspension.

Bentancur.. needs him in Europe and I think has influence among the Spanish speakers in the squad.

Porro and Udogie....Spence is not getting a look in so would get that thrown at him.

Call out the rest of them no just Werner okay he struggled but as plenty has said only Forster & Gray came out of last night with some credit the rest nah he should have hounded them as well . But he’ll know fine he’ll lose the dressing room

Well it certainly appears that Ange wasn’t just caught up in an angry moment when he said what he did about Werner last night, because he’s effectively doubled down on it today. He’s moderated it slightly by calling it ‘an assessment “ rather than a criticism. I don’t buy that, any player would see it as being dug out.

Werner wasn’t anywhere near good enough last night, or in many other games, and might have deserved being subbed and bawled out or whatever from Ange. But Ange always said he wouldn’t criticise a player in public.

Maybe Ange was feeling vulnerable or doing a bit of self-preservation or buying time, who knows? Most likely, he’s dug out the loan player as the easy option. But he’s opened a door now and he might regret it if he doesn’t do the same with other players who fail to put a shift in. And there’s been a few of those this season.

I’m not necessarily fussed one way or another, but people will now be looking for consistency from him in this regard and in simple terms it will end in one of two ways. The players rally round and support him, and his change for public criticism, or the door he has opened will slam shut fairly hard on his arse on the way out.

Cases like Werner and Janssen (remember waiting for him to score his first goal here for I-can't-remember-how-many months? Good times) show the importance of not falling for fancy goal scoring numbers of attackers playing in leagues known for high goal scoring numbers in general. Chelsea blew £45m on this guy on the back of a 28+8 G+A season in Bundesliga. They'd be better off using all that time, effort and money went to him to promote some half-decent prospects from their academy. And now here he's occupying a squad place that can go to a more deserving young player.

German, Austrian, Belgian, Swiss, and Dutch leagues are especially suspect in this regard. For each Suarez or Haaland, you get several Werners and Janssens.

I was all for bringing him back as a squad player, but he's been a disaster. He's so mentally fragile, I think he will go to pieces and be even worse now that big Ange has called him out. Some players might react positively and use criticism as a tool to motivate themselves, he doesn't strike me as one of those people.

I haven't come across anyone who wanted him back before this post. Not knocking you we are a broad church

The guy seems super dumb. Negative IQ.

He probably simply can't work out why he can't kick the ball straight anymore and just has a panic attack whenever he's on the pitch. It's almost abuse at this point for Ange to pick him.

Any links to Ange saying that he wouldn’t criticise a player in public?

Not doubting you but I’ve been debating all day with a few mates Ange’s decision to dig one player out in a shocking display by the rest of the side with only Forster coming out with any credit so I need ammunition!

Personally I believe Ange was totally wrong to do that and shows a total lack of class and ignorance of man management!

Whether it was true about Werner being lazy is irrelevant imv as any criticism Ange had should have been made to Timo’s face in private and never should have gone public!

Hopefully this will be the last straw for Levy and he’ll fire the waste of space on Monday after we lose at Soton!
