Competition Top 4 - struggling to care?

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Yep this. If by now people haven’t missed winning cups then you’ve got to say they’ve been conditioned into thinking it doesn’t matter.

The CL next season sounds an utter mess. One plus is no clubs drop into the Europa League as far as I’m aware. That instantly makes it a better tournament and one to aim to win. If we won that next season and finished tenth it would be our most successful season since 1991. Well, it would be the biggest trophy we have won since that FA Cup.

I enjoyed our run to the CL final but to was ultimately fruitless and therefore I wouldn’t call that success. But then again it depends on your definition.
It wasn’t successful in that we lost in the final. But surely if we can’t enjoy watching our team playing against the best players in the world, whats the point? If all we want is success, we might as well want our team to get relegated so that we can win the Championship.

We are not at champions league standards at all. I'd rather give the Europa league ago what still would be hard enough to win anyway. Being in the champions league and loosing heavy Munich or other teams like a Madrid then playing premier league games a few days later and maybe not performing and blaming the champions league would not be what I want for another season. Have a crack at what about our standard is Europa and get a cup and into the champions league that way. Also as a seeded club in pot 1 🤣

Spot on. We are nowhere near the level required. It would be completely counter productive.

Not sure about the dross.

I think my comment, now thst I have soothed from the disappointment of last night is how we just seem to be incapable of building momentum.

I want more than anything to see consistently high performance, to think we have players who on their day are just too good. We don't have that and haven't since Bale and then Alli.

Players who simply arrive when you need them. Who are so mercurial that you can win Cup competitions.

We need a midfielder who dominates, and a striker.. Bare minimum.

But most of all we need a mindset and a maverick.
Specialist defensive and attacking coaches. Ryan Mason as attacking coach allegedly, sorry.

Because we won't improve between now and next season?

I don't know what 'CL standards' mean anyway, do you mean to not get out of the group, do you mean reaching the SF, QF 2nd round, what?

I'd just rather be in a competition as a fan I look at and think we got a chance at this as excitement instead of feeling like 14 and playing real Madrid and playing against one of the worlds best players. I know it's all down to money but I'm just being honest. I don't want to be playing teams in Spain or Germany and getting done 3 or 4 nil then playing a game few days later and it's a massive premier league game. We just don't have the quality to deal with it. We haven't had any European games this season Knocked out the carabo cup first round and we are still struggling at weekend games

But you want Europa league where we will play mid week matches though?

So why can't/won't we improve from now until then? Why can't/won't we buy player in the Summer to push this team forward?

You've seen this team improve already this season and we've bought in players which have put us near a CL spot so why won't that continue?

No offence but this does sound like a bit of loser talk, you want to be playing the best teams in the world to test your level, that's can only be a good thing for the group.

You don't get CL experience by just switching on a tap and suddenly you're good enough to win the comp, you get CL experience by consistently qualifying for it and improving each year, same thing happened under Poch so in 2018/19 we weren't the best team but we learned how to navigate through the rounds because of what we done in the previous 2 years.

I'd like to see us win a cup. I get the reasons for us prioritising top 4/CL (will 5th be enough this season?) but on a personal level silverware is the holy grail. I remember when we got 4th back in 2010/11, it felt amazing. It's lost its lustre for me but that's because we have, overall, improved in the last 10-15 years.

I’m a bit down in the dumps over last night and the last few months to be honest. Remember when we were cavaliering our way through games - win/lose/draw - with 4 FB’s and Skipp/PEH in midfield? We couldn’t wait unleash our injured/suspended/AFCON bound fully fit squad on the rest of the league? Since everyone is more or less back fit we’ve been decidedly underwhelming.

Until maybe Wolves at home I was relishing CL football again next year. My last European game was Milan away 22/23 (with a load of mates) and couldn’t wait for it all to begin again.

However, I (& we it appears) have had to take stock recently. Spurs have played what? 3 extra cup games all season and then just league games? I can’t understand the drop off, other than to say we aren’t as good as we thought we were or might’ve been.

I’m on the fence as to whether we (& Angeball) have been found out or whether it’s the start of something beautiful.

As someone raised on the expectation of Tottenham as a cup team though, the fallow ENIC years have been draining and wearisome. A reserve team away at Fulham for the LC and a limp home defeat in the FAC was a continuation of this.

I’d just like to see us win ‘something’, anything! Get the monkey off the back (which is now a King Kong sized White Elephant - apols for the mixed metaphor). If that’s Europa League, so be it. I don’t see us able to go anywhere in the CL soon. And for fucks sake play our strongest team in every cup competition…

i would care more if it enabled us to get top quality players in but whether we finish 4th or 6th doesn't really change who our targets are, so many times when we were in it we could of got 2 top quality players to take us a step further but never really done so and that's the disappointing aspect of it

I actually think it can make recruitment harder because clubs, players and agents want more money if they know you’re in the champions league. So not only do we end up paying a PL tax but we have to pay a champions league one on top!
