Anything less than a victory in all these fixtures, whilst also playing attacking entertaining football and not conceding any goals....and there will be calls for Ange's sacking.

God forbid if Werner misses a chance.

Currently in 8th place with 13 points, but only 4 points off 4th place (currently held by Villa).

At this stage of the season, I'm not too worried about placing, more that we are keeping within a few points of 4th (a proxy for the better teams).

The Villa game should be a good barometer. Here are our teams from last season:
Royal and Davies up against Watkins in the home leg and Gil and GLC in the middle.

Agree

Even comparing the sides in home match (played first) and 2nd game played away, there is a big increase in quality from players returning from injury plus the addition of Dragusin in the away side.

I think this summer we added one genuine starter in Solanke but added a few players to give ourselves much better depth (Gray, Odobert, Bergvall and returning Spence) which upgrade first team and bench of the side which won away.

So I'd like to think we can beat Villa at home and improve our points tally on the same games played last season - and they are a rival for 3rd/4th place in PL so its an important game by itself

I only worry on whether our team is capable of playing 3 tough games in a week and keep up the same intensity.

We have Man City a few days before we play Villa and I'm not sure if we'll see a massive amount of rotation.

The only problem with comparing games is, for example, we beat Liverpool and Man United at home last season pretty much against the run of play which will be hard to replicate if they keep 11 men on the pitch.

In theory we can catch Villa due to 4th being easier to catch than a title race, and playing them at home soon, but we were more or less always about 4 points behind them in reality in the run in last season. That said, our goal difference says we are a couple of places better than where we are.

However, I don't agree that we, for example, should have beaten Newcastle or Leicester given the xG we created in those games. Newcastle we deserved a draw at most so we are only a couple of points down at most on our true position which would still be 5th or below as it stands.

The Europa team is usually 8 changes so most of them are playing one game per week. City team might be a bit stronger . I think the Europa is doing our squad a lot of good , virtually all the squad are getting games.

Can I just point out that as it stands we are league top scorers. We have conceded 9 which is a big improvement on last season. Liverpool have best defence with 2 and second best is 8 so we are doing ok, obviously plenty to work on in defence , especially left side, Romero needs to step up as well.
The big test is when we play the top 7 teams. Villa and City in the near future will tell us a lot.
So far we seem incapable of beating these teams, not even drawing most times.

It'll be hard to beat Man Utd at home?
Think Ten Hag GIF by Manchester United

I'm hoping Ange will be rotating as he thinks necessary in the run of games until next international break, and indeed restarting rotation when players return from international break.

Next run of matches until next international break

Thurs 24 Oct v AZ Alkmaar (H) - EL
Sun 27 Oct v Crystal Palace (A) - PL
Wed 30 Oct v Man City (H) - Carabou
Sun 3 Nov v Aston Villa (H) - PL
Thurs 7 Nov v Galatasarsy (A) - EL
Sun 10 Nov v Ipswich (H) - PL
International Break, next match 23 Nov

I think fans need to recognise we no longer will have a fixed first team and for most matches will have to bring in a few other players so as to rest some of our better players. And whilst our squad is not perfect we do have real choices, and our injured players seem to be returning :

Strikers ....................................Solanke, Richarlison, Lankshear
Wingers/Wide Players ............. Johnson, Werner, Son, Odobert, Moore

No 10's and 8/10's ......................Kulusevski, Maddison,
Centre Midfield..........................Bissouma, Bentancur, Gray, Bergvall, Sarr,

Centre Backs ............................ Romero, Van de Venn, Dragusin or Davies/Gray,
Full Backs ........................ .........Udogie, Spence, Davies, Porro

Goalkeepers .............................. Vicario, Forster, Austin, Whiteman

As an example, with our injured players returning, we should never try to play Son in every games (as we tried at start of season due to other forwards being injured) as that resulted in a fatigued player needing an extended rest and not available to play.

The current table, shows we should not be embarrassed by either our goals scored (18) the highest in PL and nor our goals conceded (9) as Man city have conceded 9 too and 2 other clubs above us in the table have conceded 10 goals.

So our Goal Difference is only bettered by Liverpool atm

Well I suppose you are happy we did not qualify for the CL as we would not last long making 7/8 changes. The CL sides do not make massive amounts of rotation and if we aspire to get back there must get used to only 2/3 changes a match.
We need to win a trophy this year because if we are fortunate to qualify for CL next year we will have to flog our best players to death in PL & CL and sacrifice the domestic trophies as in the past.

I would rather we qualified for CL last season but I can also appreciate that I don't think we were anywhere near ready for it.

We probably play the most intense football in world football and our squad currently probably would do admirably well within the CL group structure, but I think it would have seen us struggle domestically at the latter stages.

We'll certainly be more prepared after this season though and going forward. Slowly building a really good young squad that still needs a few more
